Perhaps the provenance you referenced re-Enzo’s reason for building road cars? Collectors of fine things value provenance of those things. There are paintings and then there are “masters”.

Tesla’s are fast, ugly, and utilitarian. Ferraris are fast enough (for most roads and owners) and beautiful with a rich history. Agree with others that 0-62 isn’t the biggest factor for most Ferrari buyers. Tracking a battery car is likely to be more complicated than it seems. Although I’m sure they will perform well.

I don't need or want a faster car. My Ferrari's capabilities far exceed my own. A good friend said I should have bought a modified Nissan GTR because it's faster. I answered with, let me think, a Japanese hatchback or a Ferrari, mmm... He clearly does not get it, but that's fine. Several years on I still can't take my eyes off my Ferrari. I don't even see Tesla's anymore, they just blend in.

Ferrari and tesla should not even be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone in an entire thread. Why not compare an F16 / F15 / F22/ F14 to a 1000 HP electric powered lawnmower, its ridiculous . And by the way, the brakes on my 328 are incredible , and its 32 years young. My new Q50 is also incredible, its good looking, its fast, luxurious , its reliable , it gets decent gas mileage. I mean , I cant believe how good this car really is !!! Its a REAL AWD machine, and the brake are awesome !! It has 7 forward gears, which can be shifted manually. This brings up another point, I have got down on Ferrari many times when it comes to not having manual gear boxes, I would love if they offered not only paddles, as well as a manual gear shifter like a three peddle car, so u can choose the paddles, or the shifter knob , so this would make me feel almost as if it was a 3 peddle car, just without the 3rd peddle, what do you guys think ?

    Thank you

I haven’t read all of this thread so I apologize if the watch analogy has been discussed.
First quartz watches were going to put the premium brands Rolex, Patek, et al out of business. Now Apple offers a watch that will run your life but the Rolex shelves are empty.
Completely sold out with years waiting lists.
    Can’t even buy a $100k watch from a dealer.
People want the best. They will pay for it.
Ferrari is a premium luxury item.
    Will always be in demand.
A lot of Ferrari owners will also have an electric car in the stable. The Ferrari will always be parked in front at Valet with the sea of Tesla’s out back.

That might have been reasonable years ago, but with Ferrari making SUVs now?

The standard brakes are good enough. They aren't good enough for track use, but no 5000lb sedan belongs on a track, regardless of if it has electric or gas power.

Also, BMW and Porsche also offer ceramic brakes as options.

Sorry but I don’t want a cheap plastic toy with no soul or sound that has a silly name and no history. Not to mention that they are ugly as hell. Bottle rockets are cheaper and faster than a “plaid”, whatever that is supposed to connote. I don’t want to ride one of those either.

A car being able to accomplish 0-60 mph in 2.9 sec vs another 3.5 sec is about as meaningful as the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin. It's just a micro slice of time that outside of the motoring press and largely non-owners of said cars fixate on. I can appreciate the automotive strides of the last few decades in getting times down from 7.5 seconds to the ~ 5 second area. However pushing below that mark just seems like a race to nowhere .

While mathematically correct that a 2020's Honda is faster than a Ferrari 308, its a dismissive take and is so obtuse as to what is special about a Ferrari. Nobody swoons around a Honda - or Tesla for that matter. Park just about any 2022 car next to a red shiny 328 from 1986 and the "slow" Ferrari will garner all the interest. There is an unmistakable visual appeal and attraction that has nothing to do with actual performance.

For that I'm disappointed that Ferrari does not offer 'Heritage Edition' type packages for buyers that include a manual transmission. In particular the new Daytona SP3 with the desire to relive the history of the marque, would've been perfect for a 6-speed manual option. Yes it will invariably be slower and that's just fine. It appeals to drivers wanting a more connected experience. Charge extra all they want for it. The buyers will be there.

I once read somewhere that Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1, drove an original Fiat 500 to work every day when he worked at McLaren.

I have a hard time believing anyone in the 40K-100k car market even considers buying a Ferrari.

I know, just like the electric mustang, let’s put a set of “speakers” on the car to make it sound like the “thing” we are replacing because the market won’t buy our “no soul” fake without it. Am I crazy here? o_O

I can absolutely see that. Driving a super car is work and driving it in traffic or everyday to work and back would have to be exhausting after a bit.

I don’t know if my daily would have been the 500 though.

Going Electric will just make our cars worth more. It's the Visceral element. Unless you're stoned all the time. I think of Rush playing Red Barchetta. Gonna be a long time before ICE Ferrari's are just considered Quaint.

This whole thread is a very long read so I did not go through all of it. But did anyone mention sound?

I think the Ferrari SOUND from an ICE is something that no Tesla (or any other electric car) will have, aside from potential synthetic sound played from speakers.
I would personally go for a 4 second 0-60 with an amazing Ferrari engine sound than 0-60 in 2 seconds with an electric buzz. Also, I think the one trick pony of high acceleration for electric cars gets old pretty quick. You would accelerate hard a few times, a few days, heck even a few weeks after first getting into the electric car and then it just gets boring and uncomfortable and you go back to driving normally, in silence.

Hey all. So I am a long time Ferrari owner, long time forum member, and I own a Plaid. Would you like some ownership experience thoughts?

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

I am a big internal combustion guy. Loads of fun, and swear by them. But my neighbor bought a new Tesla in 2016 (a Model S) and used it as his daily for many years. He ordered a new 2021 Model 3 (that came in early) and asked me to help him sell off his Model S (I am the neighborhood go-to car guy). I liked his car & wanted to get better educated on it, so I outbid his CarMax offer & took it to my driveway with little prior EV experience. It was great.

I drove it for a good portion of the year, getting use to the ups & downs, and trying all of the tech it had to offer (can someone say self driving!). It continued to impress me. Sure the interior was not up to par with many of my other cars (daily S-Class Benz etc.) but I forgave it when I passed every gas station. And yes the back seat room was compromised, and the large center stack was something to get use to, but I forgave it when the car needed zero maintenance. It was very quick, and silent, and after many miles it still delivered the goods. Very respectable for a upstart like Tesla to get it so very right as early as they did. So... I placed an order for a Plaid.

I had fully expected to drive the 2016 until the middle of 2022 (Plaid orders take some time right?) but the order for my car jumped ahead in line and after placing an order Oct 1 2021 I got a delivery notice for my Plaid on Nov 5 2021. I placed my 2016 Model S for sale on-line and got full asking price in a week. Then off to pick up the Plaid.

So, I get there to meet my new car & was absolutely bowled over with the new model. I had been told that the updates were significant (and I already liked the 2016) but you are not prepared for how well they have improved it. The interior is no longer second rate (its now on par with say a new Maserati). The "leather" is rich, the stitching is 1st rate, comfort is leagues ahead of prior models, the center stack placement is much better, great sound system, and then there is the yoke steering wheel (the yoke is just no big deal ~ for those who think it is). Fit & finish is way-way up on every facet. The paint quality is showcar good. The handling, the acceleration, the driving input is all exceptional. And remember, I am a high-line car affectionado.

Of course I had to try "Plaid mode" and run 155 MPH in the 1/4 mile (it is very-very fast), but this is not just a one trick pony. The autonomy is very good. It is the highest tech we have in full self driving currently available. Plus the Plaid battery platform charges fast (Supercharger station), so the stops for a energy supply take no longer than a basic fill up of your Ferrari at any fuel station. It is really quite remarkable. And then I see close to 400 miles on a 100% charge.

I could go on but I only wanted to let you (or any interested party) know that I put my money where my mouth is, and I have bought in after careful review with absolutely no regret. And you know what the final decision maker was to buy the Plaid? It was simply that I would pass by the Ferrari in the morning and reach for the Tesla keys. Even the 2016 Model S was fun and captivating enough to let my other cars sit - for some other day. Its happening.
