Recently I purchased a F430 spider. It was so fun. The drive was incredible. The car is extremely exciting and every time I drive, it puts a huge smile on my face. I wasn't expecting the car to be so fun as I bought it more for nostalgic reasons (my dream car when I was a kid).

I've owned two other Ferraris: F8 and 599 alonso with SF90 spider coming next year. And I've test driven a bunch others. There is none that mimics this raw, visceral feelings. For example, stat wise, F430 is the slowest of the bunch by far but it feels very fast. I'm thinking of buying another car of this experience. What do you recommend? TDF? 458 Speciale?

hmmmm glad you are enjoying your 430 - it is a lot of bang for your buck.

however, as far as visceral rides, it is not even in the top 5.

try a cs, or an f40, or a 512bbi.....and if you are in houston, then i can take you for a ride and you will see what i am talking about :)

seems like 'visceral rides' is all i have ! ;)

Scud is significantly more visceral than the F430 imo.

Looks like you caught the bug! This is one thing electric will never have over vintage Ferrari. While I never sat in one (let alone drive), my guess is the 250 GTO?

Re the last part of your question, the Speciale is a magnificent car to drive, so perfect in its balance and handling. But the TDF is levels above it in terms of what you describe as a “raw, visceral feeling”. It is incredible in every way and every time I drive it, it feels like a momentous event.

I have had the privilege to sit in and start an Enzo (though I did not drive it). The rawness and sheer power of the engine puts it above the TDF in terms of sound and feel, although I expect that the TDF would be a better drive all things considered.

But TDF and Enzo would be in my top 5.

Something with a manual transmission is more visceral than a DCT, with very few exceptions (single clutch CS would be one).

I'll put in a plug for America's car, an '05-06 Ford GT....more visceral than Scuderias I've driven by far.

Most visceral.. that damn little 246 Dino. Even better in GTS form. Slow..yup..but who cares..fun is fun and that car is it.

    F430 scud..simply awsome.
    328 GTB..lovely
    550..favorite v12 for me...very involving.
355 B.. great driving machine. But be careful when shopping. Lots of rats out there.
348..Best steering feel of the bunch..gearbox ruins the adventure.

You might want to clarify a price range or you'll get someone like me saying a 250 GTO / 250 TR.

I haven’t driven either, but I’d guess they’d be on my short list ;)

    Everybody has their opinions.

I think the F355 and the F12/TDF sound the best.

I don't understand, I thought only the 296 was "fun to drive."

Ok since race cars were introduced IMO this is probably the most intense considering HP and manual shift.

F50 / Enzo / F40 / 288 GTO / 512 BBi ( so many more from the 50s and 60s ) For even Deeper pockets, try a 312 T4 around a race track, flat 12 is pretty insane . With that being said, Visceral to me, means what is the best drivers experience, speed does not really factor in so much for me, exhaust note, none or very little buffer between your ass and the road, the best feel, feedback. and resistance from the steering box. Putting my 328 into a fast sweeper and getting all four wheels equally sliding, balanced, to me is as visceral as one can get, and its under powered compared to the aforementioned . I will stand by my opinion that only a Ferrari can give you the absolute visceral ride than any other machine in the world . Its the car God would choose to drive, any day of the week and twice on Sundays, its that simple.

    Thank you

For visceral, F race cars > 430 street car or most other street cars. For one with a license plate, early non-ps 355 ex-Challenge race car. Also, 50s/60s dual street/racers.

Yes they were lucky, asking for it, very Karen'ish atmosphere here now with ecologists, anti car types etc and the police/gendarmes really out to get you more and more...

Back on topic, of all the racing Ferraris I tested for articles and future book chapters the most visceral was not the 333SP, the 512M, the 512BBLM, the 250LM, the 250TDF, the pontoon fendered Testa Rossa but the 375MM.

That was like riding a T Rex with that incredible Lampredi engine. The chassis is useless, the brakes weak the steering a suggestion, the back jumps sideways on bumps when you are not even trying...a wheelbarrow...but when you go up in the revs the roar, echoing off the valley, the burst of acceleration are just mind-blowing. Afterwards My arms were shot but I was grinning like an idiot all day:)

Part of what makes the F430 “visceral” is the gearbox. The Scud’s Superfast2 gearbox is twice as visceral as the F430 gearbox. SF2 is last of breed, so that will put Scud or 599 GTO in a class of it’s own. Newer F1 gearboxes will perform “better” and more efficiently, but less visceral.

Having said that, I feel a Ferrari gated shifter is just as visceral as an SF2, but in a different way … a more pure way because your left foot is engaging and controlling things to precision. Things just come on with lightning quickness in an SF2, which equates to a different type of visceral feeling. I have about 6-7k mi in a Scud, so I can say I’m pretty familiar with it’s pros and cons. When driving SF2 for the first time, it feels like the greatest thing ever. Wild and exciting. Overtime, there’s just an “easiness” about it that wore off for me. Not a smooth driving experience either.

When I’m done building up my manual 355, I’m confident it will be as visceral as a Scud. Slower car, but pure with a more vintage F1 soundtrack and understated looks. And most importantly, like an orchestrator, you can control the soundtrack of the car to your liking in a manual. Try double-clutching in an F1 :). The gearbox can engage as smoothly or as violently as you want. You are in full control. YOU are engaging the mechanicals. THAT’s visceral.

You like mechanical or automatic watches?
