Yes, but unfortunately most of these Ferrari race cars are not race anymore - they became ..."art".....................!

Yes, art they are, but investors came in and made them " investments " that's why most are hidden away or trade as future commodities.

… but were they REALLY racing when these photos were taken ?
Or is this somehow different than let’s say Goodwood Revival or Monterey Historic's, etc today ?

And don’t get me wrong, I love seeing great vintage cars in their “natural”, i.e. originally intended, element.

Yes and no. In the late 80s and early 90s at the Chicago historic races(now known a the Brian Redman International Challenge) Augie Pabst and Davis Hobbs used to show up and would dice it up with other cars. Even at 75%+/- of their former selves, these guys were moving. Other drivers, not so much. On the negative side, it was not unusual for drivers to get overly aggressive in VSCDA group 6.

Having watched more than a dozen Shell Historic Racing races in the late 90s/early 2000s, the front runner guys were really racing. I miss those events so much. It was perfect. Laid back, cheap, at the best tracks in the world, with the best Ferraris ever and with real gentleman racing.

Timo: Vintage racing encompasses a wide range of talent and desire (making it more dangerous than most people realize). I can tell you for sure, at the end of the grid where we run, there are some serious drivers. Thankfully, most are respectful of the significance of the cars, and "try" to be reasonably careful around other cars and drivers, but some of us race pretty hard. Goodwood is another world unto itself with some drivers more than willing to trade paint and wreck cars. It is a strange combination of hard driving in many fake cars. When C-Jags are outrun by Austin-Healeys you know something is not right.

Sadly true. In the 80s three GTOs, a 330LMB, the Breadvan, and dozens of other one off cars that we took for granted, were routinely seen at Joe Marchetti’s events. Now, Can’t remember the last time I saw a GTO in person.

So other than themselves, who are they trying to fool/impress and why ?
Rhetorical question, no need for reply.
And with all due respect to all who participate, take it seriously, but refrain adding* any non-period performance advancements or equipment, perhaps that’s another reason why I can’t consider it REAL racing, in which if I’m not mistaken usually includes strict rules and regulations each car and competitor must adhere to.

Perhaps “historic”/“vintage” racing should have different classifications, one for “as-originally-raced/period correct” cars, another for “modified” original cars and one for “fake/recreation/replica/etc” ?
And maybe latter should also be split to “period correct” and “not so …” ?

*Any and all safety related additions, like fire suppression, roll gage & good, multi-point seat belt harness, etc I can fully understand and support, but no “better/modern” brakes, suspension or other mechanical improvements.

Event was called "European Historic Grand Prix". More pics here:

Site is in Dutch and quality of pics is poor since they are stills from a amateur movie.
