Hi all, long term lurker finally looking forward to delivery of my first F-car, 812 GTS in Rosso Corsa Metallic. Been hearing about the possibility that PPF will significantly dull the metallic effect of the paint, does anyone have experience/recommendations in this situation?

    Pictures???????? Please!!!!

I’m personally not a fan of any PPF, in my opinion what is the difference if the PPF gets scratched or blemished or the paint…either way you need to have it repaired. I prefer nothing between the paint and the wax/sealant/etc. I may be the minority here, but if the paint gets scratched, it gets scratched…at some point when there are enough blemishes on the car I would just have those body parts repainted. My 599, no PPF :)

I haven't noticed that with Suntek, STek or Xpel. A nice clear film shouldn't hide or dull out the finish whether its metallic or not.

There will always be a difference between PPF and non-PPF on the same surface regardless of paint type. This will also continue to be more evident over time and sun exposure. The plastic film will also have a different finish to the surface versus bare paint.

I think if you've got a truly skilled company that is doing the work you should not worry about it. Plus PPF may save your ass in times when you need it. Take a look at the work that Topaz Detailing does.

I am with you on this one mate. PPF is not for me and i think its a big rip off. I used to have self healing PPF on my 488 coupe , like hell did it heal. It never did anything but just damage the PPF and cost of replacing is more expensive than resparying the bumper so i just took the whole damm thing off which is also expensive. I wish i never put it on. Better to respray front bumper every 3 4 months when i get stone chips. My car is a daily hack and has done 80,000 miles now. I owner car but well looked after

DO you know how expensive TOPAZ are, for the price they charge to detail a car to level 3 you can get a car resprayed in trade for less.

Great first post. Sounds like a beautiful GTS. All my cars are 100% covered in PPF. I do the windshields too. It gives me peace of mind when I am driving on a busy freeway. Also, PPF’s best feature is ease of maintenance. My cars are only washed once per year, the rest of the time I just spray with a quick detailed and wipe off. I like to spend my time driving, not detailing.

The question is " how do you feel after a drive and notice that you have picked up a stone chip on the front etc ", if its no big deal and you accept that stone chips are part and parcel of driving your car then why bother spending £2000 on PPF. If like me, your heart sinks and its out with the touch up stick, then maybe PPF is the way to go?
Do you plan to keep the car or sell in a few years time?, a full front end PPF fitment is a good selling point as the dealer knows they dont have to shell out ££££ on a front end re-spray when they take your car in part ex.
PPF like all other materials has come a long way since it first came out, its a lot thinner now and will last years without going yellow. A good PPF applied by a top company will not dull the effect of the metallic paint, in fact it should enhance it!, most PPF installers will machine polish the paint prior to application to make sure its free from any blemish or defect.
I agree with the other post though - i would be sceptical about the self healing PPF.
Gyeon Quartz now produce a polish purely for PPF its called " PPF Renew ", so if you get a few light scratches, you can now remove them!
Cleaning the car with PPF is less hassle too, and there is no need to bother with waxes etc, it doesnt need them. Remember you can still apply ceramic coating over the top of PPF!
PPF versus Re-spray - a high end car like yours will need to go a specialist paint shop, to get the paint to match exactly is a nightmare, so they will not just do the front valance, they will want to blend into the wings, perhaps bonnet too.
A dealer would rather see a few stone chips rather than a poor paint job?
I asked Aston Martin Works Service at Newport Pagnell, (the home of Aston Martin ), to re-spray both lower sills on my 2012 Virage, just the lower sills!, estimated cost was £2500, could not get a quote lower than £1500.

She looks stunning! - hopefully the weathers turning for the better so you can put some long awaited hours behind the wheel.
It is disappointing to see paint defects on such a high end car, and i know its no consolation, but i see imperfections in new Astons, Bentley, Porsche etc. Not done a McClaren though so cannot comment on their paint finish.

A local detailer has expressed that McLaren paint quality has been improving with every model for the last decade while Lamborghini has the VW quality you would expect, so looks like Ferrari is the odd one out here.
