first car for a new driver. Don't really want the stigma of giving a 16 year old a brand new BMW but obviously safety trumps all.

And where is the Ferrari content?

My neighbors own X3's and I have always found them to be attractive, functional, and safe. Way better than her previous Caddy SUV.

    Give a proven mature and responsible female 16 yr old a license? maaaybe. A 16 yr old boy? ... NEVER!!! ... I was one. :p Seriously tho. N E V E R !!!

Cell phone while driving is reason enough, never mind lack of self control at 16.

    Another data point

For my college bound son 2yrs ago we got a great year end deal on a Stelvio . 10k miles later so far so good.

Also considered an x3 which is a different car for a few reasons.

I’m also looking at CX-5 right now for my daughter. Seems like a solid first car, though I’m looking at used since I just have a problem putting any new car in the hands of a 16 year old new driver.

Hear ya but given the current used car prices it actually makes sense to just go new.

Personal opinion here, new car aside. Newer (to me, post 2013ish) BMWs are utter garbage, and just like the 1000's of other available SUVs made, are throw away cars. When the I6 was tossed for the way of the 4 cyl junk, I stopped buying.

That aside, money no object, no way I'm giving my 16 year old daughter a brand new anything.

Its a jumping off point, a point of no return, I have seen clients over the years giver everything from a brand new M5 to a pre-owned 1980 Volvo 240 DL

Once you give them the nice XYZ , it can only get better right, so start towards the lower end, teaching them how to maintain said vehicle along teh way.

How they take care of that, shows you how well they will take care of a nicer version of transportation along the way

Said BMW will not age will with deferred repairs / services, be more expensive along the way, and so on.

All the above is my opinion.

There are arguments for both ( which is probably why you are asking )

    Which way are YOU leaning?

If safety is 1st concern, look at the Volvo. My wife had a BMW X1 and was not impressed then bought an XC90. Her insurance rates went down, despite the car being 2x the MSRP bc the Volvo is rated as much safer than the BMW was.

I personally do not feel the quality of entry level BMWs are worth the premium over a Nissan, Mazda, Kia etc.

My wife and I have owned 3 Mazdas over the years and all have been very positive ownership experiences. We just replaced my wife's 2015 Mazda 3 and looked at a CX-5.

We liked it but there was more road noise than we liked and the back seat was a bit tight. We went with an Acura RDX A Spec instead which was about $10K more.

Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus for reliability and guaranteed good resale value. Less depreciation than German. ;)
Mazda's are good, under appreciated cars, buuut, unfortunately resale is not as good as above.

Toyota Highlander. AWD, tall enough to see everything, but not tippy because of the longer wheelbase. Great in all weather conditions. My son got caught in a nor’easter in Indiana and never felt like he was going to be blown off the road. Incredibly safe and reliable and your insurance won’t go through the roof. Added bonus, my daughter (senior in high school) loves the car. I really can’t say enough positive things about the car. This summer the driver’s side was sideswiped in a hit and run while she was driving. She was emotionally shaken but physically fine. Car did its job and because they make a ton of them, it was repaired in under a week.

Avoid the BMW. Poorly built money pits these days, with a lot of missing features due to chip shortages. I'd avoid SUVs in general for new drivers, but Mazda seems like a solid choice.

A couple year old Volvo XC60 would be better than those choices.
