I’m clearly in the minority because this one seems so popular, but I couldn’t watch it. I tried. I really did. But it was so awful I had to turn it off. As for good ones, both Rush and Ford v. Ferrari were extremely well done, and both Mrs. Rosso and I enjoyed them immensely. For absolute favorite though, I might have to give a very, very slight edge to LeMans.
Well, as a teenager, besides Grand Prix, a fav was The Great Race. I looked it up online and at the time "Most critics attacked its blatant and overdone slapstick humor and its lack of substance." Yup, that was me! My favorite line was from The Gumball Rally -
Not a racing movie, but Hot Rods to Hell is damn good. It has the immortal line of, "Run em off the road, Duke baby!"
I wasn’t inspired by that, just depressed. I don’t think they possibly could have made that movie anymore depressing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ah yes, The Great Race. Best part for my 12 year old brain at the time was starring longingly at Natalie Wood...
OK, both Bullitt and The French Connection were not racing movies but they had some great chase scenes (and NOT CGI) like "Gone in 60 sec."
Liked them all.....Grand Prix, LeMans, Rush, Ford vs. Ferrari.....also Green Helmet. I couldn't pick a favorite.
wow.. there's a lot of movies I've added to my list to watch now. I didn't know or had forgotten about a lot of them
I liked both Rush and Ford vs. Ferrari very much, but my all time favorite remains Grand Prix. It's a dated and somewhat corny plot, but I think because I was about 8 or 9 when it came out and there wasn't anything else like it back then, it struck a chord in me and ignited a life long passion that remains today. I'm sure it did the same for countless others of my generation as well. Not really a movie, but I also liked the action documentary "1" very much. Gave me goosebumps when the end comes back around to the beginning to illustrate how the sport has improved its safety measures. Makes you appreciate the drivers of those bygone era's even more.
Watch the first ten minutes of the children’s movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Fantastic footage of early 1900’s racing. Le Mans does have great racing scenes. Probably the best. But as far as a movie? They saved way too much money on script writing.
I saw the Green Helmet when it first came out around 1961 and it really got my attention. Sadly, I do not remember too much of it but I was really intrigued by the road racing (Mille Miglia?). Dick - when did you see it? Anyone know if it is available for rental or download? Bob Z Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks like it is out there on TCM and iMDB but not finding it for download or purchase - Thanks for the post - will keep searching - Cheers
Part of the movie "Winning", was filmed at Road America (Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin). I was hired to be an extra for the movie. Spent 5 days and got payed for it. Most of my time was spent in the pits & pit lane, and @ the finish line. Was involved with the pit stop filming, where Newman would come in near the end of the "race" for a pit stop, get minor servicing and a drink of water in a paper cup, which he would drink and crush the cup and speed away. We would pick up the cup and try to sell the cup to the teenybobbers because Newman had touched his lips on the cup. We had lots of time on our hands because if you were ever involved in filming a movie, most of the time was spent standing around and doing nothing. Newman enjoyed the driving so much that he began his racing career soon after. He won a good amount of races. He once said the winning a SCCA national championship and the SCCA Presidents Cup was far better than winning an Oscar. I won the SCCA President Cup in 1983 and know the feeling.
