Hello again, could you tell me how I can check the level oil in the PTU and in the gearbox. I can't find instructions for that. Everywhere it says go to the dealer. Thanks! Bobi
Hi Martin, please explain to me, does the PTU unit with two different oils work? One ATF the other TF 1055. and another question - is the oil on the PTU unit connected to the rear gearbox? Thanks? Bobi
Hi Bobi The PTU and rear gearbox fluids are not connected in any way at all. The PTU uses a 75w/90 oil to lubricate the gears and a hydraulic oil to apply pressure to the clutch packs and also to change gear. The hydraulic oil is held in a reservoir above the electric pump and this is what gets consumed if the ptu fails internally. The gears are selected by a fork assembly but not like a standard fork where it is controlled from outside the gearbox, these forks are hydraulic and work by pressurised hydraulic oil being fed through drilling's in the gearbox. Regards Martin
I removed the side cover exposing the oil reservoir. The lower reservoir needs oil. The upper and lower reservoirs are connected with a hose. Martin can you please confirm this reservoir takes Shell DTC-F3 oil. If so the other problem is locating this product. I found a quart on ebay. Its not available locally in less that 20L increments. Hi Yes the dct-f3 is the recommended oil, however if your tank is low it does indicate you have a leak and it's most likely going inside your PTU. If it was an external leak from a hose then you would most likely have a wet patch on the undertray and on your garage floor. If you can get a good quality dextron 3 locally that can be used it will also have the added advantage of being a visual diagnosis of the oils mixing. If your level does go down again if you drain the PTU gear oil and it's red tinged you have an internal leak. You need the lower tank full and the upper empty, so if you fill the upper tank part way then open your driver's door that will activate the PTU hydraulic pump keep doing this until the lower tank is almost full. If it won't get rid of the last bit of air in that tank don't worry just leave a little more in the top tank, but don't run the top one full. If your PTU does need a rebuild we can do it for you. Hope that helps Martin
@isellair would you mind re-posting those photos in this thread, https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/ferrari-f12-gt4-lusso-ff-599-ultimate-diy-guige.647684/#post-148180806 Just so anyone looking for a DIY on where to check the fluids can be all in one thread.
All right, guys. The photos are provided by Martin, he thinks he is a good specialist and responsive !!!
Hi Bobi, The photos were courtesy of isellair and of his car. They do show the tanks well and also show which cover needs removing to access them but I can't take any credit for the pictures.
I got some inspiration to check out mine just for sanity, here's a picture of my lower tank for anyone else's reference, looks to be full as it should. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's a good shot, you can see the minimum line on the tank too so very good reference for everyone's information. Also good peice of mind for you.
Looks like at 13:17 they state some misinformation where it cant easily be rebuilt or replaced I wonder who contacted them with 3 failed PTUs
So an update on my PTU situation. I added just a little oil and the faults went away and have not come back so far. Car has been driving great and I have been monitoring the oil level. It has not dropped.
lol right, I assume the next video title would be "Ferrari wanted $75k to fix my transmission, we did it for $800!" But hey maybe that will help in the long run people not be afraid of buying these because of ptu/dct issues.
F-ity-F Took my FF to be checked over by a world class specialist before i take it to le mans in a few weeks. On the way, i got the dreaded warnings - 4wd system failure, etc etc and Wet mode. I was cruising at 70mpg when it happened, the car felt OK. I stopped, turned it off, restarted and it was clear for the rest of the journey. I'm hoping it's a combination of low voltage (havent changed the battery in 4 ownership), low fluid and low miles as it's only done 1000 miles in the last 2 years. Fingers crossed!
Side question, has anyone done the Alcantara starry light headliner? Looks cool! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
