A Bristol sleeve valve engine. And that was just to make the sleeves work. It replaced push rods and valves. Someones definition of simplification.

Something has gone haywire here! Somebody got the correct colors and applied them correctly. Of course, they had the actual airplane to give them a clue but the paint on Glacier Girl is a bit too shiny. It's really frustrating to see all the money and labor spent on "restorations" and then slop some paint on them without making the effort to determine how it should look. With all the color pictures and actual T.O.'s that define paint mixing and correct patterns of application , and marking dimensions, one would think that it would be an integral part of the restoration. Most all of the B-17's are wrong in O.D. and under surface gray colors and sheen. B-17 "Nine O Nine" had the wrong O.D. on the upper surface and I suspect that it was copied from an old National Geographic cover that featured that airplane after it had been in hard service and the O.D. was bleached into a light green tone. Many of the restored C-47's have gross errors in the paint and markings. There is one back east that is the worst mess of several bad colors and incorrect markings on the nose but it is touted as a "restoration". O.K. I'll quit
My Dad always said, "If you are going to do something , do it right". He was one of the architects on the Washington National Cathedral.

Absolutely! The P-38 recovery crew didn't try to taxi an airplane over rough snow with an open barrel of gasoline next to a running APU.

You can't make that stuff up. And of all people, Greenamyer. He was at the controls as I recall.

He was in charge of the entire ragged operation . One crew member died of pneumonia during the effort.

My wife and I recently spent at night at the TWA hotel at JFK. Went inside the Connie, not knowing what really to expect, and there was a full blown party going on inside. Cocktail bar in the rear of the plane, “flight attendants “ taking orders, just a very cool atmosphere going on. The plane itself is configured with sofa’s and chairs so there is plenty of room but at the same time a bit cozy. If you ever have a layover at JFK, worth going in and having a look. But I do have to say, all the levers in the cockpit gave me the shivers. Having flown Gulfstreams most of my career, no wonder it took so many people to get that thing off the ground, I have no idea where to begin.

YE GADS! I believe that is the engine that was designed by the famous engineer, Getcher Assengere. Like I said, "Running in circles and jumping up and down." With all those teeth , it would be something to see if one of them needed a root canal.

Having worked on the KC-135 in 1954-57 it is nice to see someone on the receiving end of the boom. A C-5 must have been a hand full to formate with a tanker . Kudos to you, my friend.

Recalling a comment by Taz about using the director lights under the tanker, one can see them in your post. It occurred to me that it was 67 years ago that I worked on the KC-135 . Time flies but I guess that I haven't yet.

The director lights were always just this side of too dim, but they were effective. I definitely used them as my crutch. The KC-10 in comparison looked like a fully lighted flying city but that stupid center mounted engine blew right on our T-Tail so we had to dance on the rudders much more. The C-5 was a handful bc usually we were on-loading around 100k lbs of gas which took 20 minutes of fighting to stay on the boom. Our bow wave tended to push the back end of the 135 up a little too which didn’t help.
