I can't believe no one has played this card yet. As an old man, it appears younger folks have monetarized everything. Nothing stays the same. Everything changes. All you have left is memories, but, man, what memories. That is something Ferrari nor anybody else can't charge me for.

As a multiple time attendee and one time exhibitor, where my car won Platinum awards, seeing how Cavallino has crumbled the past few years makes me sad. It was such a great event at one time. I remember the dueling car shows of Cavallino vs Supercar Weekend and I've never seen so many exotics in one place those couple of years. Supercar Weekend is long gone and the new ownership of Cavallino has certainly hastened its demise it seems. Some of my favorite Cavallino memories are walking through a field so crowded with Ferrari that it was difficult to take them all in, the races at Moroso/PBIR, walking through the Breakers parking lot and seeing some fantastic cars not displayed and getting called on stage to get my trophies and of course making many friends in the process.

All things must change and if you've been paying attention you would have known that Cavallino was on the way out about 5 years ago when the ticket prices quadrupled. I've noticed that the field has been notably smaller the past couple of years. I guess Barnes sold out at the right time.

BTW, my conversations with the judges on the field that day were fantastic. I believe at least one of the disbarred judges rated my car. He had several questions for me and told me of Ferrari's challenges building cars in the mid-80's when mine came down the line. I concur that the pool of people qualified to judge the older cars is quite limited and even barring a handful of them from judging is a huge mistake.

RM SOTHEBY’S AND CANOSSA EVENTS FORM GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP ACROSS PORTFOLIO OF LEADING COLLECTOR CAR EVENTS
Partnership to see collaborations across the Cavallino Classic, Modena Cento Ore, Terre di Canossa, and Stella Alpina.
    • RM Sotheby’s and Canossa Events form Global Partnership that will see RM Sotheby’s become Canossa’s primary sponsor and auction partner
    • Collaborations across many high-profile automotive events across the globe
    • Palm Beach Cavallino Classic will be the first official collaboration between the two organisations
BLENHEIM, Ontario (15 January 2022) – RM Sotheby’s and Canossa Events are delighted to announce a new partnership that will see the two organisations collaborate across the full spectrum of Canossa’s world-leading collector car events and activities. RM Sotheby’s is now the primary sponsor of all Canossa events and is the official auction partner.

RM Sotheby’s and Canossa have a long-standing relationship with RM having supported the Modena Cento Ore, one of Europe’s most exclusive and highly regarded historic motorsport events, for many years. From 2022, the partnership is elevated to new heights that will see the two companies collaborate on a global level as Canossa looks to expand its presence throughout Europe and the Middle East.
The new partnership will kick off in Palm Beach, Florida, the weekend of 20-23 January, with the Cavallino Classic, an event that has been established for 42 years and which celebrates the beauty, speed, and history of the Ferrari marque. Canossa Events recently acquired the Cavallino Classic event, and this year is significant in that it is the 75th anniversary of the celebrated Maranello marque. Canossa will continue to build on the worldwide reputation of the Cavallino Classic, bringing new innovations and a distinctly Italian flair to the event. In addition, the Cavallino Classic event has expanded into Italy, with the Cavallino Classic Modena in July 2022, and the Cavallino Classic Middle East in December 2022.

Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions at RM Sotheby’s, says: “We are delighted to have forged a long-term partnership with Canossa and its portfolio of spectacular events. RM Sotheby’s is a luxury brand, and we choose to align with the best in the business and with people who share our love and enthusiasm of the collector car hobby. Canossa has a worldwide reputation for excellence, and we are proud to partner with them and to help enhance the participant experience across all their automotive events.”
Augustin Sabatié-Garat, Director of Sales UK & EMEA at RM Sotheby’s, says: “We are particularly proud of the partnership we will enjoy with Cavallino Classic in the USA and at the two newly established locations. Ferrari is a special brand, and this partnership allows us to further support and celebrate our relationship with the marque. RM Sotheby’s is the established world leader in auctioning fine Ferrari cars, having offered seven of the top 10 most valuable Ferraris ever sold at auction. In the 40 years that RM has been selling cars, many Ferraris have crossed the block, from restoration projects to 250 GTOs, and we have been lucky enough to conduct many sales in Maranello in partnership with Ferrari S.p.A. To be able to support the Cavallino Classic, and help enthusiasts celebrate the marque at such a leading event, is fantastic for us.”
Luigi Orlandini, Chairman and CEO of Canossa and Cavallino, says: “I am very glad to announce our new partnership with the leading auction house firm RM Sotheby’s. We have been friends and partners for the last ten years at the Modena Cento Ore. We share the same values and passions, and I can’t think of a better way to further develop our friendship than with Cavallino Classic.”

Agendas…..Well, some of the following is opinion and speculation and some of it is history. Others here will be in a position to confirm or dismiss it and are welcome to do so. While I have no first hand knowledge, this has been related by more than one person with significant associations to Cavallino, and by people who have no reason to embellish or fabricate…….A few years ago the Barneses were close to a deal to sell Cavallino, either to a party referred (and preferred) by FNA, or perhaps even to an entity with a direct business connection with FNA. Apparently the deal broke down, and there was a certain degree of hard feelings over it and some muscle flexing on FNA’s part; for instance FNA was said to have put pressure on its authorized dealers not to have a physical presence or sponsorship association with Cavallino. I know of a dealership that instructed its employees not to attend (except as a spectator) at least one Cavallino event, not even to look after a customer’s cars.

Now comes 2020 and Cavallino is sold to an entity which, by many accounts, has a very valuable relationship with Ferrari Spa, at least in Europe and perhaps in other markets. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. And it has been speculated (or maybe even confirmed…I don’t know) that Ferrari has become a sponsor of Cavallino, and if true, there isn’t anything wrong with that either, except that it has to be a factor in how the event is organized and operated. Because Ferrari is the gorilla in the room and even if they aren’t calling the shots, certainly the owners/organizers are always going to be aware of its presence and what its priorities are, and how the overall relationship can be protected and optimized financially.

We all can see where Ferrari is going in terms of branding….just look at the former Ristorante Cavallino and the Ferrari “fashion” line, and the CVs of the people moving into the C-suite in Maranello….and there’s no reason to expect that the same approach won’t apply to events that exploit the Ferrari name.

EDIT: Having just read Marcel’s post above it’s pretty clear it’s going to be all about “leveraging” and “branding.” Too bad. A unique, charming and annually anticipated event will now become just part of a “suite” of “properties.”

According to the media info (post #240) Cavallino Classic is 42 years old ("....an event that has been established for 42 years..."). Now THAT is new to me. Last year (2021) the 30th anniversary was held. The inaugural Cavallino Classic was held 22 February 1992 and that makes it 30 years, not 42. It is also mentioned that the Inaugural Cavallino Classic in Modena was in July 2022.....well, I was there and it was July 2021, as July 2022 hasn't come up yet, at least not on my calendar.
Maybe I am missing something here? Quality control? Oh well, who cares?
    Yes, I am picky.

PS: OTOH the actual magazine "Cavallino" came out in September 1978, that makes it about 44 years if I am right.

Hagerty recently did some sort of linkup with Rob Kauffman’s SPAC (Special Purpose Acquisition Company), which is called Aldel Financial. And Hagerty just went public a few weeks ago on the NYSE. Hagerty’s current market cap is US$ 5.6 billion. The new Broad Arrow Group partners with Hagerty, Inc. Kauffman is a founder of Fortress Investment Group, a true gearhead and owns a number of extremely rare classic cars. Also runs Nascar stock cars out of the homebase in NC. Super nice and extremely well-connected and knowledgeable car guy.
See pdf for Hagerty & BAG Info.

Hagerty’s acquisition of Amelia gives me the same concern that I have about Cavallino. The concours has been the vision and passion of one man, and that can’t help but be diluted and compromised by corporate ownership and management. There are Wall Street analysts in the equation now.

.........Audrain, Pebble Beach, Salon Privé, Goodwood, Villa d'Este, etc.........

Amelia Island Concours was sold because founder Bill Warner of JAX is 79 and unfortunately had to fight with several massive health issues. He did the right thing and I applaud him for the successful sale. Bill is the ultimate car guy for sure.

Perhaps we need a separate thread for all this?
