The C-5 wasn't in the inventory when the KC-135 was designed but I doubt that a longer boom would have solved the bow wave problem. Same thing for getting lower with the KC-10 to eliminate the center engine turbulence. How about a probe and drogue system? That way, all you have to do is to chase a cone all over the place.

Bob- It would take forever to refuel something big with a probe and drogue. The boom has a much higher flow rate.

I know. Just a tongue in cheek. There is no answer to some things. Somewhat smoother airflow at the cone but not much flow. More flow at the boom but you get knocked around to get it. I can only imagine the experiences that you have had in this game and I respect it. I have done next to nothing but I had a lot of fun.

Bob- F-111s were steady as a rock behind a tanker, KC-135 or KC-10.

Thanks, Taz, I can assume that it wasn't in any of the downwash or wake turbulence and it's a pretty slick airplane anyway. It would be interesting to see the flow behind the KC-135 and KC-10. We did some of that on the computer on the 777 fuselage.

Anti-aircraft fire counted from bullet holes indicate small arms fire not Flack. Small arms fire from aircraft or ground fire? The airplane shown is a Lockheed Ventura or maybe a Hudson and not really representative of most operational aircraft. Flack damage was larger and hit most all of the airplane in random patterns. "Bullet holes" from ME-109's and FW-190's cannon were deadly and hardly ever counted by anybody.

I was at Langley Field with Leo ( second from the left) and we both received awards in the Army Arts Contest. The (5) 11X14 prints of his photos of "Extra Joker" being shot up were unforgettable because one could see the fear in the eyes of the pilot as he looked back at the fire in the number four engine. A sad part of that story was that the P-51 escorts were again lured away by some FW-190's while another group jumped the bombers and shot down five of them. Twenty years later at Boeing I met and worked with a B-24 pilot that flew with Leo as a crew member in the 451st bomb group. He had some stories of his own. Image Unavailable, Please Login

An earlier photo in the sequence. Look closely and you can see flames under the left wing, behind the hole.

Leo said that it took all the grit that he had to keep the camera going as Extra Joker was being shot up. After Extra Joker went down he looked for the airplane on their left and it, too, had been shot down and his airplane had also taken some hits. My late friend, Lew, that had Leo Stoutsenberger on his crew sometimes survived FW-190 attacks and severe flack damage and had some tough stories about the missions out of Casteluccio, Italy. His airplane , Patches, lived up to her name and one time spent 3 weeks in the repair depot getting flak damage fixed.
