Hi All, just finished a timing belt and pulley change and new distribution parts. The car is starting easily, runs very smooth at idle and revs well, BUT has no power when driving, need high revs to get the car going but it does manage to get above about 60km/h. Any pointers as to where I should start looking for the problem? Distributer timing, Carbs, cam timing? I could spend hours trying to source the issue, every thing was marked before I started to work on it and it all is back to the same marks. Is there a simple way to diagnose lack of power when the engine starts easily, idles and revs smoothly? Thank in advance...

Two things to look at regarding lack of power at higher RPMs are the distributor advance and the carbs. The distributor advance curve can be checked by a service shop that has an older Sun distributor machine. The carb float levels should be checked as well as an overall inspection and cleaning. Also, make sure all the accelerator pumps are working. Finally, everything depends on the fuel pump being up to specs.

Yes ;). First things that I would do is: 1) confirm/deny if you have spark on both banks, and 2) (if spark is present on both banks) check the ignition timing of both banks at idle using the flywheel timing marks and confirm they (both) advance when the RPM is increased. Unfortunately, you may need to eventually recheck that the cam timing marks are reasonable.

Will recheck the basics, Carbs float level, spark on both banks, try and check both banks ignition timing (will need to buy a new ignition timing gun) and advance. Confirm fuel pump is good. I am in mallorca and have limited access to a knowledge base of specialists on island..
