Ferrari no longer offers a physical key. Which is too bad, because the 458/599 era keys with built-in FOB were very cool.

Has the encryption/tech advanced to the point that a blank 458 key can't be coded to a 488?

Physical keys are cool. Robot car style key-less FOBs are not. There's a tactile sensation to having a car key that I feel like people really miss.

Anyone have any idea if the newer cars can be hear the old key's signal?

    Same,

    could one hypothetically
Program a 488 fob to a 458 and then cut the blank to start the 458?

thus a 488 fob that controls and starts a 458

Would be strange to pull out a key with no real end on it to start the car

So the way the key works is there is a programmable cell within the key itself , it looks like a small glass pill. Any number of specialized outfits can program that pill and then you insert it in the innards of the 488 fob. Now in terms if the stock pullout key in the 488 fob is compatible with the 458, I do not know.

you’d need a blank that could be cut I suppose. Hmm I’ll be the poser with the 488 fob for the 458. I just really like key fobs

I don't think you are a poseur at all, especially for just having a key fob you really like. I'm sure you can find a specialized locksmith to cut it correctly.

    So the steps are.

    1) move the cell into an 488 key
    2) find a key expert to cut the key

Doesn't seem that hard, though the devil are in the details - so I don't blame me if this goes south! I did reprogram a 612 and 456 key just as I described if that's worth anything.

    Ohhhhh move the cell….

So it isn’t possible it make the fob a secondary key, you basically have to give up the original key? At least the electronics part??

You should be able to buy a new cell and have it programmed so you don’t have to remove from your old key. Carefully add it into the 488 fob (if even possible)

Not entirely true. You can make a backup key that will start the 458 as long as you have the right blade (SIP22) that is cut to match your OEM key and a Smartchip that is cloned to your OEM key. A good auto locksmith can do this. I know because I did it.

    Exactly,

@458knows here is the cell that needs to be programmed, not sure if it fits inside the 488 fob though. Make sure you confirm that the 'pill' fits in the areas I pointed with yellow arrows as suggested zones.

awesome might try this out as there is only one physical key so might make the secondary a 488 style fob. Thank you
