Never saw a Connie in the Navy before! Kinda hard to land on a carrier I imagine. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Visualize the residue left behind a squadron of KC-135's and a squadron of B-52"s that followed them when they performed a mass launch at Larson Air Base. I'll never forget the thick black cloud of exhaust smoke with B-52's breaking out left and right to keep from hittiing someone. The screeching of the KC-135 's with full ADI going was ear splitting.
Bob- Depending on year, those BUFFs sometimes had live nukes on board, too. Not anymore, thankfully. Larson closed in 1966 and SAC continued flying nukes through at least 1968, when a BUFF crashed in Greenland, scattering 4 weapons and nuclear material over the impact site.
Thanks, Terry. This incident occurred in the early 60's , I can't come up with exact date (1961-1962), but we were worried when it took place because of the current nuclear tensions and the fact that we were teaching Boeing employees there a course in Nuclear Self Defense. A pretty scary incident when the sirens went off and then a totally impressive display of training and discipline as the ramp was quickly emptied of about 20 airplanes.
Bob- Elephant Walks and launches are definitely impressive and noisy. Especially in the turbo-jet era.
Only 2 of these R6Vs were made, and one survived at Opa-Locka Airport north of Miami for many years. There had been plans to turn it into a restaurant, but those fell through and the aircraft sadly was scrapped.
I was implying that the "stews " should be respected now because they are a hard working and too often abused service individuals.
