    Doing a full suspension tear down and took plenty of pictures for reference. However i am curious if the shims in place are there to adjust the imperfections of the car or are they suspension adjustment tools? Essentially is there a default/ neutral amount i should reset too? Will the alignment correct things as well?

    I guess the answer is both? Yes, there are shims that are either inserted/removed, or moved from one side to the other to get all of the alignment angles in spec.

    I am doing a complete suspension rebuild now as well, and also took copious notes to keep track of all the stuff. Lot of stuff to keep track of. Are you going rubber or poly bushings?

    The front oblong shims, between the front upper & lower ball joints and the upper & lower control arms (see pic, with a hole at either end, approximately 24mm wide by 76mm long and 26mm wide by 71mm long) are to adjust Caster Angle, there are 16 total (four for each front ball joint, mix on each side adjust Caster). The large U-shaped shims (between the frame and lower control are mounts) are for all Camber, front Kingpin Inclination and rear toe. Corrections welcome!

    +1 regarding the notion that these shims can be used to adjust caster. Whether they are intended for that purpose is an open question since they are so difficult to readjust because disassembly is so difficult.

    On my car, the position of the shims is different left versus right side but this puts my caster within 0.1 degrees of each side.

    Within the bounds of adjustability, caster is probably the least critical suspension alignment specification.

    Is there a factory default setup?

    If there's a factory default, it would be starting with 2 shims in each position (which I may start with based on a full rebuild)

    See pics: My 1979 USA GTS had two on each side of both the front upper ball joints. On the right front lower ball joint, three shims in the rearward ball joint to lower control arm position, with one on the front side. On the left front lower ball joint, three shims on the front side, and one on the rear side... hope this helps.

    And here was my original set up. When I changed to the new ball joints, I put it back the same way
    Top = left side
    Bottom = right side

    According to Ferrari the ball joint shims are used for caster, not the control arm shims.

    Only insofar as the upper inner shims are concerned. It is shown in the parts book.
