His legs and feet got really messed up in that 1992 practice crash. Utterly amazing he came back the following year to try to “tame (conquer) the beast” that is the Brickyard.

To me, that shows some courage. Piquet didn't need to do that after 3 WDC, IMO.

terrible crash…one of the most devastating I’ve seen.

in other news, Hamilton is back on Social Media so I think that may answer the question this thread posed

The 1992 race was The Crashfest--incredible carnage. I half expected the pace car to hit the wall.

I think the guy just took a break from social media and the post-Abu Dhabi siht storm. I don't even see how that is an issue, really. I would have likely done the same, given a similar situation.

Errant report, regardless...not back yet but I would still expect to see him lined up to race in Bahrain.

It's all a well scripted, free media, free publicity, ego stroke. Everyone talk about Lewis.

Didn't we do this last year?

I think the social media silence and speculation about retirement is a PR move intended to detract focus away from Verstappen. I think Hamilton wants to be the first and only 8-time world champion so the decision to quit rests not upon being butthurt, but about whether he thinks he has a realistic chance at that 8th title. He won't want to carry on if he slides into the midpack though, he'll want to retire near his peak.

I think the FIA will call his bluff, maybe state a clarification for the upcoming season over race direction, and we'll see both Hamilton and Masi back.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

We can imagine plenty of different scenarios about Hamilton staying or leaving.

I think the timing of his decision (one way or the other) could be linked to the first pre-season test days.

If he judges the new car gives him a fighting chance of retaking the title, he may stay; if not, he could decide to end his career there and then.

In between, he must have taken legal advice in case of departure, which would be a breach of contract.

At the moment, there is no need for him to pronounce himself, so I presume that's why he has avoiding the press.

His position is quite enviable in fact.

Indeed now Mercedes has no choice but waiting his decision.
Like McLaren did with Senna in 1993.
If this true I am not sure they are really happy at Stuttgart..

Naw, he won't quit - just theatrics to pressure FIA. Hamiton wants Masi's head on a pike.
