I am astonished to have just found this thread. It's very gratifying to see how many people enjoy our work with Palawan. It's very mortifying to note the errors I made in it. Thank you for your interest. DCN
Thread was only started early 2011 ... glad you could finally join the party buddy. Just out of interest what book numbers (and editions) do you personally own?
In response to Rosey's question, above, I have spent quite a few hours trying to check on what numbered copies of 'Ferrari in Camera' we have here. Guess what - tee-tee - I can't find them. I think it will take a backhoe to unearth them from the stacks of books and magazines. 'Organisation' is NOT my middle name. DCN
I read somewhere once you have over 15,000 motoring books, so if you start looking for them now, you might find them around the time the world gets back to some sort of normality. In that case I'm assuming the C stands for Chaos !!
Re book numbers - I have just found I have a blue cloth-bound version, No 122. I know there are others, somewhere here. DCN
So Melbourne is plunged back into lockdown. To keep me from going stir crazy stuck at home I may as well update book registers. I have just unearthed my yellow-cased, blue leather bound copy. It's un-numbered, presented to yrs trly - as inscribed on its metal front cover plate - by those very nice Palawan people. (I would have taken a dim view...) DCN
I have purchased 991 from Philhul Regular (Blue) Edition: #051 Marcel #103 Rosey #116 Patrick Badot (private collection) #119 Seb #122 Doug Nye #128 Ron #123 Mick (also owner of #987) #230 Paul #262 Miki-Paki #429 Stefano #434 and #336 Christian #444 Martin #454 National Automotive History Collection #465 F.J. #559 Jack #590 Rothchops #597 Patrick #761 Matt #762 360C #776 Nathan #789 Llenroc (?) #801 Sharknose #805 360cs France #816 Bruce #868 Mark (possibly now sold) #912 On sale at Abe Books from the personal library of Rob Widdows. #960 Lubo #987 Mick (please see also #123) #991 Lambdaman New (Red) Edition: #310 Hugo #307 Scuderia Dino Torino (?) #328 George #373 "Autoland" Hilversum #376 "Autoland" Hilversum (Sold to Italy) Leather Bound: #035 Christian #052 Jaime #081 Maarten #086 The Chin
I sold my copy (230) a few years ago and regretted it...but yesterday I took delivery of # 36 (Standard Edition)
I picked up #135 a little bit ago and have it waiting for me to open officially at the end of the month. Andy
#518/1000 is for sale on eBay UK. Asking GBP 1.825 #38/1000 is for sale on eBay UK. Asking GBP 2.000 or best offer. #33/1000 is for sale on eBay UK. Asking GBP 1.400 Hugo
Thanks. Just looked as the £1400 looked cheap and I see the cover has what looks like water marks or stains of some sort. The others look in good condition.
I think the current asking price for a mint edition is around GBP 1,800 And agreed, always buy the best copy you can afford.
You're right, copy #33 appears to have white mildew growing on the cover. Run, don't walk, away. That could easily propagate itself onto the rest of your library.
Seeing this thread again prompted me to spend an hour yesterday with my copies. I continue to derive pleasure noticing something different in the photos when reviewing with fresh eyes. For the registry: #603 Regular Blue Edition ex-Ed Niles #030 Leather Edition
Just to wander a tiny bit off-thread - and with apologies to the moderator: As a heads-up for fellow enthusiast book collectors here and just in case anyone might be interested - I understand that there are now fewer than nine top-flight leather-bound Connoisseurs Editions of the happily very well-received Phil Hill 'Inside Track' books remaining of the 100 1,388-page limited-edition sets originally printed. Fellow enthusiasts advisory or Investors' alert...either way I hope this post is acceptable? If this last-chance opportunity appeals, please see: https://phil-hill-book.com/the-book/connoisseurs-edition. DCN
But the most important thing is the "paid price", not the asking price. These copies have been offered for months now, nobody is prepared to pay these prices.
I bought mine just under a year or so ago for around GBP 1.800 (mint with the outer carton- see post #102) and that was a fair price back then. I can't imagine they have gone down in value since then.
Buy a copy, you won't regret it. One of the top 5 (or higher) must have books in any Ferrari library.
I bought my latest copy in December 2021 outside of eBay, the ask was in the £1850 region; I paid less than that. The copy I acquired (#36, and I think you know where I get my books from nowadays) was pristine. I’m happy with what I paid, knowing what I bought and sold my previous copy for (#230). I don’t think I’ll see a copy of this quality at this price again, and hopefully I’ll keep hold of this one…
