If they did not charge you for "rebuilding the Voith damper" then the grease was not replaced.

No chance the Voith was overhauled Ian. I have done this job 4 times now and there aren’t many ‘techs’ who venture into the Voith especially in Australia. Just spoke recently with a Ferrari trained tech of 11 years has never opened one.

Also if it’s not leaking evidently does not mean a past leak hasn’t been rectified and then the old contaminated Voith put back into action. The last Voith I re did was part of a triple seal leak repair. I wasn’t going to do the Voith but upon opening it up for inspection the grease inside was badly contaminated with gear oil and stunk like it too. So was worth the extra effort to rectify.

Next, next, next month.... Small update. My tech doesn't think the rattle is due to a bearing fault. He thinks a slightly rough idle is contributing to an imbalance (hence the rattle). He found the cat temperature higher on the left bank (395C vs 297C) and subsequently found cylinder #7 spark plug looking a little black.

The leads and coil pack seem ok, so he's going to test the fuel injectors on that bank later today.

Update: Well, believe it or not, the rattle has gone with the replacement of 8 spark plugs and a new OEM fuel injector. Very happy, even though I bought lots of expensive parts that I didn't need.

    Thanks for the input!

That's great to hear, Ian. I can't understand that sonic response to a bad fuel injector and 8 spark plugs.

Yes, same here. Since the problem seemed to arise after a long period of non-driving, with my current gearbox issues, I'm going to get lots of opportunity to reproduce this contributing factor.

Meanwhile, my tech is looking into it... and my contribution will probably be buying lots more expensive parts that I won't need. :D

Yep. Misfire, rough running can often cause noise in manual transmission or dual mass flywheel. Typically they go away if the clutch is depressed because that stops the rotating mass in the trans from interacting with the engine, but with a dual mass flywheel not so much.

Think of a marble in a box. You accelerate the box forward and the marble hits the back of the box and stay there. But if the box decelerates, the momentum of the marble causes it to roll forward and strike the front of the box. When the box accelerates again, the marble doesn't accelerate until it strikes the back of the box. Rattle. Same type of thing happens in a transmission or dual mass flywheel when the engine RPM is unstable.
