Sorry for a bit morbid (although related) question, but how did the driver and, if one was onboard, the passenger fared that ?
Timo: Unfortunately, the driver was killed in the accident. The car was traveling at very high speed when he lost control. The crash was so violent he exited the car through the driver's footwell under the pedals.
Dyke, thanks for expanding. Sorry to hear/read that, but the condition of the vehicle all but suggested something as horrific.
Ed: I don't remember. I seem to recall it was twisted like a pretzel. My friend bought the car from a junkyard in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. He was able to use quite a few parts in the restoration of his 4 Cam.
Same car, a bit later. Recreated by Carrozzeria Egidio Brandoli in Montale (between Modena and Maranello). Lives in Switzerland since 45 years with same owner. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login
2018 German GP parade car for Sebastian Vettel at Hockenheim, I guess they did not check the history... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Classiche slept..... Not the first time as Scuderia Ferrari drivers are regularly put into replicas for GP F1 parades..........(Vettel at GP Belgium 2016 in a 250 Cal Spider replica, and Vettel at GP Japan 2016 in a 500 TRC replica.......). Nobody seems to really care. Marcel Massini
How much of the original car is in this one? The data plate, I assume, but anything else? Especially given that the first wreck was stripped for parts for another car before this?
Data ID tag is new (repro). Engine number has been restamped. Body is new, as is interior. Metal plate where actual chassis number is stamped has been cut out and welded into/onto new metal. All this was done around 1980. Marcel Massini
So, literally just about everything reconstructed (with incorrect body style configuration ?) around the original chassis number stamping ?
I've heard of cars being built around a tach needle, and this is literally just about the same thing!
It's not bad looking at all considering it was a brand new build in the 80s. I saw that car at the Basel expo - 10 years ago? Looked good and fooled me.
When the value of a car exceeds its non-serial production cost you end up with this. Except for the restamped engine, which may mean a 'lesser' car was broken up, a pretty result but not exactly 'original'. Regards, Art S.
