Yesterday I was watching Lost Leonardo the documentary on Salvator Mundi being the last great lost painting by Da Vinci, and naturally I started wondering about the great "lost" Ferraris.

Which cars do you all consider as the greatest lost Ferraris and cars for that matter?

0646 is not totally lost. Its engine survives in the 412 MI #0744.

If I remember well I heard of a 410 Superamerica or 400 Superfast that was last seen in the 1990s in a junkyard around NYC, but I can’t remember the s/n or history of the car.

I saw a Bugatti Atlantic once hit by a train, restored or should I say resuscitated, it was in 2018 in a basement...

One of the Royales was destroyed in an accident. Makes you wonder what could total a Royale?

    Dear Dinosaurs,

It has been at least a dozen years since I last tried to chase down the story of the second from last of the 500 Mondial Series II cars, namely 0574/MD.

Siro Sbraci apparently raced the car several times in 1955 and 1956. The earliest on 5 June 1955 at Mugello, and the last at Pescara on 19 August 1956. I have one clean photo at the 22 April 1956 Coppa Della Consuma.

There is a crankcase stamped 0574/MD Internal Motor # 11M installed under an early F2 cylinder head in chassis 0188 at the Museo dell’Automobile di Torino. Knowing the fragility of these tipo 111 motors it is not a surprise. The Assembly Data Sheets reflect that the motor was rebuilt with a used crankshaft on 18 May 1955. Also there is a cryptic note “Transformata in 500/Monza per circuit del Mugello” on the chassis sheet dated 21 May 1955.

More confusing is the obvious overstamp of 0424 MD over 0574 MD on the chassis which should have been 0564 MD. In any case there is one missing 500 Mondial whether it is 0564 or 0574. Ideas?

    Best regards,

    Robert

It was the Atlantic modified in period by Figoni & Falaschi, I saw it after restoration at Retromobile it is a beauty!

A bit off subject sorry as it’s still about Bugatti and not Ferrari, but the 4th Atlantic, property of the factory, disappeared in February 1941. Chassis 57453 was supposed to be on a train to Bordeaux at the time but we don’t know if it took the train or stayed in Molsheim. It is a lost Atlantic for the moment. It may be in a barn around Bordeaux or have been destroyed/stolen by the Nazis…

    Back to Ferrari, isn’t 375MM Berlinetta 0378AM missing ?

Another Lost Ferrari would be 1879GT. I think Mr. Massini said a few years ago in another thread that it is probably this car in the picture with (the great) Audrey Hepburn (I can’t remember the photographer’s name I’m sorry for copyright), but also the car driven by David Niven in the first Pink Panther movie !

I saw it in a multi story car park in 2000. Then again at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2019. Looked like it had been restored since 2000. And on UK registration!

A shot in the dark was released in 1964, a year after The Pink Panther.
It takes place mostly in France with less attractive cars (still, the Mini Radford De Ville is gorgeous!) :)

What about the damaged Ferrari 250 SWB supposedly kept in the basement by Jacques Swaters at his dealership? Not sure if 'lost' is the proper term for an enigma...

I had heard that there was a 250TR in a barn or shed in Wisconsin at one time. Totally shot. The person that owned it knew it was valuable and wanted a lot for it and apparently, at the time, 15-20 years ago, it wasn't a feasible proposition to buy and restore. The price was simply too high. Was there really a TR in a shed in Wisconsin, and did it eventually get purchased and restored?

Yes, this is 1879 GT and let me just say it still exists and belongs to a friend of mine who lives in both EU and USA.
At the time of the movie this S2 Cab belonged to (4th owner) Robert John Wagner, actor born in Detroit/MI on 10 Feb 1930, resident a the time in Rome, Italy.
