Hi, have to replace the clutch (twin plates) on my Testarossa 88 (see pics).

Am looking for improved replaced kit vs genuine for a reasonable price.
I ve found specclutch.com who looks having interesting options.

    https://specclutch.com/applications/ferrari-testarossa-twin-disc-option/?car_year=1988&type=13925&product_type=upgrade

Anyone have experience with them? some feedback?

    Many thanks in advance

I have not. I will tell you that set up height is critical on TR clutches. The last two twin plate clutches I installed both took some machine work to get the set up height right. If you don't know how to measure it or what to change to make it right, I suggest you send it to someone that does. It will save you time and headache trying to get it right.

My satisfaction with rebuilt, performance or non standard clutches in these is exactly zero,

I am about to install a Hill Engineering 512 TR clutch conversion in one and looking forward to that. At this point it is the only non standard installation I am even willing to try.

The clutch in the pictures above was not worn out, it was killed.

Yes Brian, clutch is in bad conditions, but surprisingly the gear was running ok before we remove engine for major maintenance and open the clutch for cleaning/regreasing.

I am thinking also on this HR kit, in superformance they sell it 2,900 £... but quite expensive.
Also, have found Helix kit (pressure plate, interplate, 2 x centreplates and the release bearing) already balanced, that am investigating now for 1,267 £ (mardigras motorsport)

I have zero experience with spec in ferraris but above posts are important to consider.

I raced vettes and people liked spec for that. I personally order a spec clutch for my c5z06 racecar with class rules for close to stock clutch, looked at the spec quality and returned it. I was not impressed.

In theory any company making kits for cars like the tr should have figured out plate thicknesses etc for proper setup height as just one of several parameters. So they should be plug and play. Where we had to do more work was resurfacing oem ferrari clutch plates and getting rebuilds to follow specifications given. I always show up at rebuider shop with a set of calipers and always tell them they are going to have to do it again if the specs aren't right. One advantage living in big city is I can look the guy right in the eye.

I agree fatbillybob, spec is cheaper option but looks not easy plug & play as they say original flywheel is to resurface....

I see 2 reliable options now to replace the clutch kit with improved solution vs oem:
    1- conversion to 512 sole clutch with HE for 2,900 pounds (excl. shipping/duties) which is full kit incl. disk, pressure plate, flange, seals, released bearings etc but very expensive and I don't get well the advantage to convert;
2- Helix clutch kit already balanced which includes pressure plate, 2 disks, release bearing and interplate (numbers 15,3,2, 1 and 8 in below diagram) for 1,267 pounds but to add flange, seals, release support... (numbers 16, 17, ..) for est. 943 pounds with HE improved also. This option looks less expensive and reinforced vs oem one. Total 2,210 pounds (excl. shipping/duties)

AP Racing used make a really nice replacment twin disc set up for the TR. Not no sure if they still do, but the ones I have installed were plug and play and worked amazing. I have never had any luck with the rebuilt twin disc stuff in any car.

I have but it always was 2 trips to the rebuilder. I think those guys breathing clutch disc causes brain damage. They only understand one thing. Get paid=discs in spec given

Thanks for your messages Windsock, Tom & Fatbillybob. Appreciated

Actually, have understood now Ferrari is using AP Racing for clutch assembly (item 135076)
At end, as i need to change also Flange and release bearing & support, it makes at end same price as the HE conversion kit more or less. (around 2,900 pounds)

The only alternative option I see which is financially interesting and could be reliable & improved also is the Helix clutch assembly with HE Flange & release support (around 2,200 pounds)

For sure, HE full conversion kit would be piece of mind as smoother according to Windsock, no part purchase to add and 1 sole supplier if issue, but pricey

That AP complete assembly is still available and is what I just installed on my 91 TR. It works flawlessly. It is also what they sell at the dealer (in Modena, no less). Highly recommended.

Good to know they are still available. It's been quite a while since I have needed to do a clutch in a TR. Not too many of them around here anymore.
