If the fire can be put out and the ship still floats and remains stable, I suppose it could be towed to the nearest port where the cargo can be offloaded, though probably at tremendous expense. It might be the least expensive option to torpedo it and collect the insurance. There are tens of thousands of brand new cars and full containers of goods littering the ocean floor. Containers regularly fall off ships because they stack them so high, and they float just beneath the surface for days or weeks before sinking. My brother is a longtime sailor and he says floating containers are a serious hazard for any small vessel because they can't be seen until you ram one of them.

The magic of the internet - I had vague memories of a ship carrying cars sinking in the English channel in the early 2,000s and could find back some reference (https://www.media.volvocars.com/us/en-us/media/pressreleases/1219); at the time a colleague of mine had his company car in this ship (one of the 350 mentioned Volvo XC 90), all cars were lost and deliveries delayed by several months.

    And this:

A Bentley spokesperson confirmed to The Drive that 189 of its vehicles are also on board the Felicity Ace, worth an estimated $30 million by themselves, according to the publication. The Drive also confirmed with Audi that a number of its cars were also aboard the now-abandoned ship, but the company declined to elaborate on just how many.

We've also reached out to the firm that owns the Felicity Ace, though we have yet to receive a response.

It's unclear right now what will happen to all of the cars aboard the now-abandoned cargo ship as it continues to float through the Atlantic. Buyers waiting for their cars to be delivered have shared their concerns both on Porsche forum Rennlist and Volkswagen forum VWIDTalk, while people on 718forum.com are reportedly receiving a message from the company's "Track Your Dream" service notifying them the company is aware of the Felicity Ace situation, and to contact their dealer for more info.

Matt Farah, Road & Track contributor and founder of The Smoking Tire, confirmed with his dealer a Porsche Boxster Spyder he recently ordered is aboard the Felicity Ace. He tweeted on Wednesday saying he planned to send the car to DeMan Motorsports to have the firm's 4.5-liter engine upgrade and shorter gearing installed. If things don't improve, though, he might not have a car at all.

Not all hope is lost for the buyers of extra-special Porsches, though. Back in 2019 Porsche restarted production of the 911 GT2 RS after four of the last allocations were lost on a sunken cargo ship.

    Apparently this has happened before

Anyone wanna bet it was a taycan battery fire that started it all?

Wonder if we will ever find out...but, if true, I imagine future shipments will be via airtight containers or in a separate EV-only vessel. VW/Audi also makes EVs, could of been ....

and, reading this article, very well could be an EV fire as the crew could not extinguish:

    https://roadscaptain.com/cargo-ship-carrying-porsches-and-volkswagens-burns-in-the-atlantic

    to whit:

While it’s still too early to tell what caused the fire, it was serious enough that it couldn’t be put out using the equipment that the crew had access to on board.

    and:

Several sources said most of the vehicles in the hold were new Porsche and Volkswagen models

Lithium-ion batteries in the electric cars on board the vehicle carrier Felicity Ace have caught fire and the blaze requires specialist equipment to extinguish, captain Joao Mendes Cabecas of the port of Hortas said.

It was not clear whether the batteries first sparked the fire.

"The ship is burning from one end to the other... everything is on fire about five metres above the water line," Cabecas said

Generally speaking you won’t be able to put out a lithium battery fire like that. You just have to leave it to burn itself out.

Whether they started the fire or not I’d suspect most everything on the ship will be written off either through fire damage, smoke damage, initial fire fighting efforts or combination of any of the above.

There are detailed regulations for the carriage of dangerous goods at sea. I’ve not looked at it in some time but will be interested to see how it deals with car batteries. Batteries that firm part of the ships propulsion are dealt with separately and there are a few interesting cases of fires with those that google will find easily.

They don’t let Chevy Volts park in many garages in downtown DC for reasons similar to this and a recall of batteries they spontaneously explode.

Aventadors were on that ship as well. My guess is Lambo will make a new batch but that may not be possible with tooling….Production has ended.

The other day Ernie Boch was on local radio. He owns Ferrari of New England. He said he had a new Flying Spur on that ship and expects that the car is fried.

He said it was the last of production of the w12 engines for Bentley. He doesn't know if they will replace the production that was lost.

    sink sank sunk

well, if it was an EV battery fire, then it's only a matter of time before this happens again. and when that happens, insurance companies will say it's an unacceptable and unsustainable situation
and some changes ($$$) will have to be made. Any added costs will happily be passed on to consumers. :D

    >>> conspiracy theory #1 - VW didn't want an investigation to find it's ID ev's were responsible! ;) :p

If it occurs again, I doubt you will find any marine vessels willing to accept the load regardless of insurance, it takes time and a lot of costs (downtime plus cost to build new)!

Manufacturers have to move thousands of cars around the globe. How about 100% complete thermal heat detection system that triggers early emergency crew response?
by the time smoke and fire detection triggers, it's already too late and sprinkler systems are useless against lithium battery fire.
