Hi I wondered if anybody had an opnion on a car I recently looked at. The welded supports highlighted in the pic look a little odd and unlike anything I've seen on other cars. The car is a Euro 1978 308GTS.
    Appreciate any advice. Thanks!

It's an interesting location to have a janky re-weld, possible accident, maybe someone jacked up the center of the rear crossbar and cracked the original welds to the main oval tubes (but doubt it) Perhaps overzealous jack use... Also concerning: Is that a hole in the main oval tube, left side, inside from the triangular gusset?

Thanks for the reply. It didn’t look like factory welding to me but I’m no expert so was hoping for some more knowledgeable eyes on it and yes that does look like a hole which is worrying!

@stonker apologies, to address your specific question: I am >90% certain those are not factory Ferrari welds. I just took two pics of mine: The gusseted version is a 1979 USA GTS (disassembled), and the non-gusset pic is a 1980 Euro GTB (assembled).

Great thanks very much. The pics you uploaded are like what I found on google searches as well. I couldn’t find any pics with gussets and welds like my original pics. ‍♂️
    Really appreciate your help

A floor jack doesn't do that. That was all damaged, probably an accident and received a very unskilled repair. The main tubes are very beat up and lumpy.

Yeah that makes sense. Some other things on the car hint at an accident too. Thanks!

Is the cover original too? Our cars are hand built to an extent so will vary but the gussets I feel should be full and not just infills. As the others say, the rails are very poor condition.

Its hard to walk away, but there's lots more carb cars will come up in GTS and GTB. Any doubts it's best to be safe

It’s disappointing and the car is at a very reputable dealer which is surprising!

Hi Mike. The car is in the UK so it’s HPI who do car checks. The early cars with short chassis numbers are harder to find detailed history on. There’s nothing recorded as far as insurance claim etc but it did have a registration change in 1990.

Dealer said it's common for carb 308's to suffer stress cracks in that location and that a lot have been repaired to strenghthen the chassis near that cross member. Anybody got an carb car with the same repair? Be great to see some pics. Later QV and 328 had a triangular gussett to strengthen that area.

I've passed on the car but good to learn more. Thanks!

Yep......I can't find anything about it online or any pics which would be weird for a common issue so yeah I walked as it didn't sound right!

Thanks, yeah and also it's made me think I really want another QV rather than an early car even though those carbs sounded amazing!

Curious why? To me it's not like any extra pace on a QV is significant. All our 308s are slow slow these days and it's history, noise and looks that count to me.

On the reg change, that can be used to hide a lot. My son was buying a Volvo and it came up clear in several checks including DVLA history. It's a while ago now so I forget a lot but HPI only showed the reg change and following that up we discovered an insurance write off that was being concealed. I don't suggest for one nanosecond that your reputable dealer did this but it could be something in its past.

My 308 is locked up so I can't get underside photos yet but I'll be interested to see.

Just personal preference really. I just prefer the look of the QV and it’s easier to start especially if left for long periods but I get that the carb version is the purest 308 and does sound best too!

Thought so! Starting I'll beg to disagree but I understand different taste.
