I will need to replace the timing chain, as there is excessive play. I have already ordered a new one and should get it next week.

My question: Can the new chain be linked with the old one on these engines and "fed" through to replace it OR does the timing chest need to come off?

Have you checked the chain tensioner? There is an adjustment screw and lock nut to remove any excess play. Although unlikely, the spring in the tensioner might have broken.

I am trying to get to the adjuster now, it seems it is only possible by removing both alternators, do you know how it is done?

No, I have never work on this car. On the 330's and early 365's there is clear access to the tensioner on front passenger side of the engine.

You will need to remove the timing case for the chain replacement.

    Why?

I have done them a bunch of times and never resorted to that.

Can it be done with the engine in place?

Easily. The cars are getting old so as good a look as possible at chain guides is advisable. Ferrari recommended due to its length replacing them every 40,000 kilometres so we did it frequently. If have done it with cams in but only once and will not again. Too hard, slow and labor intensive not to mention risky.. Remove cams 1st. One person turns motor via socket on front pulley. One person pulls old chain and feeds new chain once connected together.

If you remove the cams, won't the drive gears fall down into the timing case? Do you mean "remove the rocker arms" so the cams turn with much less friction?

Bill- There are no rocker arms on the 365 GTC/4, GT4 2+2, 400, or 412 engines.

OK; I am familiar with this design. I had it on my my 4 cylinder Fiat 124. The cam lobes operate directly on adjustment shims. I still have a box of them.
