I’ve been at daughters running practice, I hope done and works when I get home. This morning the expected time went from 25 hours to 9 in about an hour.

yay, it was done and appears to be working great. that's pretty smooth for 1 TB and 8 year old Mac.

I also switched to Affinity, my occasional usage just doesn't justify paying a PS subscription and found Affinity's raw processing to be better. If I'm doing anything with layers the interface is clunkier but still works once you put up with it.

I haven't done any video editing yet, but so far browsing and email it is nearly the exact same feel and speed. That's a good thing I'm already comfortable with it, but also validates holding onto the old MacBook Pro for 8 years.

still no noticeable difference in performance or battery than my 8 year old Mac, I think that is just amazing and speaks volumes about the quality of Mac products. remember the old ways especially with PC based systems that every 2 years you could upgrade and have an overwhelming improvement in performance.

problem #2 - getting use to the 2 pressure stages of the touch pad. like highlighting text is not the heaviest pressure, it is like a medium pressure. weird, but I will get use to it. otherwise the keyboard key spacing and everything so similar to my old one there isn't any mistyping.

problem #3 - like all the Office products, Outlook transferred over and worked out of the box, but I'm not able to search my inbox to find old emails. all my old emails are there, it is just the search isn't working. I'll have to research if a way to load the search system.

so a little 2 week review.

still my overall general opinion is I'm surprised how little things have changed since my Mac Book Pro in 2014. Same physical presence, 1 TB vs. 2 TB, same battery life, and there were no noticeable speed differences until I did video editing. all of that said after 8 years I needed a new computer anyway, if just to refresh the software.

outside of Apple, a little frustrated by my bought licenses for the suite of Adobe products didn't work on the new laptop. instead of tracking that down as 5+year old software anyway I just went to the damn $60 a month Adobe subscription. I hate how software went to subscriptions!

feature wise I love the fingerprint login.

as mentioned above I finally had a chance to edit some video and it is a huge improvement. using Adobe no glitching as I move clips around and outputting 3 minute video takes about 20 seconds instead of 3-4 minutes.

I suggest using a mouse instead of the trackpad.

    much more natural

Get a slightly smaller mouse, (not a tiny one) lenovo sells them, and set it on the armrest of the chair. Leather actually makes a very good mouse pad.

    https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Precision-USB-Mouse/dp/B00CMB5O5Q/ref=sr_1_6?crid=WCHHMPTCJTRT&keywords=lenovo+laptop+mouse&qid=1650124930&sprefix=lenovo+laptop+mous%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-6

Try it, you'll like it. $35 bet if you try it for a week you will keep using it, at least while sitting anywhere you can use it.

You will be way more productive with the mouse.

I'm fine with the track pad, except when typing sometimes my palms move the cursor, I guess if you were running a mouse you could turn the track pad off.

Did you try Final Cut Pro? It is made for the new M1 architecture. Adobe's trash is still largely single threaded junk.

    https://www.apple.com/us-edu/shop/product/BMGE2Z/A/pro-apps-bundle-for-education

They don't check or care, at least not last year when I did it. I just put in my gmail address and a week later I was approved. Final Cut Pro has some learning curve to it, but it is vastly better than Adobe's garbage.

As I said before Affinity Photo is nearly a replacement for Photoshop. $50 one time buy, can install on multiple Apple computers. No Creative Cloud trash, either. I am a Photoshop user from the start and nearly never use it anymore. I have Adobe Cs6 installed and that's only because I bypassed the call home checks it did.

Another set of software I use is Topaz Labs stuff. Free 30 day trial on all of it. I bought most of their stuff and quite like them.

No subscriptions on Affinity or Topaz software. Buy once and use forever or until their authent servers get taken offline in 2042.

I don't do videos often, but an old Adobe Premier person. After I saw it wasn't working I tried iMovie for about an hour and hated it. I then just bought the Adobe suite and Premier Pro. A couple things were frustrating to learn, but had my first movie out within an hour, it is good enough for me.

You must have bought the limited version, as the full suite is subscription only.

Years ago I had to make a decision between FCP and Adobe, we went with FCP. Both have their pluses and minuses. Apple being as they are, we figured they would eventually screw adobe.

I took your suggestion and purchased Affinity. I only use it to convert raw images that my CS6 won’t do, otherwise I much prefer photoshop and Lightroom. The adobe products just have too many plug ins and support. We have about a dozen computer running adobe products for photography, and re-learning a new product takes time. IMHO, the adobe products are better, which of course, comes at a price.
