Before taking my 360 Modena to a shop, I thought I’d change the oil and clean the variator (variable cam timing solenoid) to see if that would clear the P0025 code. Is it possible to remove the solenoid from the engine bay or will I have to go thru the access panel inside the car? How difficult is this job? Any advice from DIYers who have done this will be greatly appreciated!

Access to the solenoid is thru the panel inside the vehicle with the steering and water pump moved out of the way (not completely removed). Removal of the solenoids themselves requires a special socket (400+) due to the limited space between the solenoid and the cylinder head. Yes, you can possbilly make yourself a crude socket (33mm if I remember correctly) but that is labor intensive and time consuming. The solenoid is on back order and very expensive so I understand why you are going that route. Remember, a regular socket will not work due the requirement of a O2 sensor type socket for the wires/connector. Another factor is it's location in the head for over 20+ years and it will require a meduim breaker bar to break loose. You don't want to round off the solenoid nut.

Wow, thanks AD170. Sounds well above my pay grade; as I figured. Just couldn’t find any good reference for the job but you’ve confirmed my suspicions as to the difficulty accessing the solenoid as well as the special tools required. It’s off to the experts with this one! Thanks again.
