I received a shift seal kit last fall (1982 GTSi 308)
Inlcuded was the shaft boot, two "O" rings and 2 "C" rings. (see attached)
There are plenty of threads regarding help in the job, but I'm unclear if this is an optional choice, if there was just "extra parts" (I'm skeptical of that) or am I missing these additional pieces to the reassembly puzzle.

I understand that X rings are an option but I don't have those right now.Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for reading!

The original rings were U rings, but I understand X rings might be better, although more stiff as I hear from others replacing those.

I replaced mine using original rings since I do not see the benefits using stiffer rings.

So to be clear, the ones I just removed were O-rings. The U rings or C rings whatever they are called, do not seem like they fit. But would still like clarity on the question. Thanks for youre reply, but it did not answer my actual question.

Could be that the Supplier is just trying to make sure that the Purchaser gets the right parts in the kit for whatever particular version 308i-2V that they have. The 222/81 SPC for US version 308i-2V (which is not available online AFAIK) shows 2 each o-rings 105558 are used, but the online SPC for euro version 308i-2V shows that 2 each "oil seals" (what you called C-rings) 115372 are used. Just a guess -- who was the Supplier?

Supplier was All Ferrari Parts in Ohio. I called them and they did not know, but are skeptical that Ferrai would include a non-essential part in any kit.
I just tried again to force them into the groove, but they do not fit, so I'm going to just replace the o-rings that were in there and move on. (with the new o-rings of course, not the old ones)

I don't know about that (and, I believe, Maranello Concessionaires would be the initial supplier -- not Ferrari). Having a common kit, that seems to waste an inexpensive part, can make more sense than trying to keep track of different kits for different versions and keeping that all straight at the many steps in the process. A better question is: Why did Ferrari design different versions of the same model to use different parts ;).

If you like a pdf copy of the 222/81 SPC for 1981-82 US version 308i, use this link:

I think that you received a kit that includes the seals for the earlier version (the o-rings) as well as the seals for the later versions. Of course, you will only install the ones that are for your model and discard the other. I am doing this now, and will replace the o-rings with viton ones, possibly the x-shaped quad rings which, although stiffer, will give a few extra years before having to do this again!

    Good luck,
    Dario

I used x-rings from verell . Everyone says its stiffer. No idea why anyone would say that. Its fine.
Btw my car had 2 plain ORings prior to changing to X-rings

Makes sense. I'm not too worried. I don't beleive they were leaking anyway. This was a "while you're in there" job as I'm replacing my oil and gear pan gaskets. Although the shaft boot was pretty worn. Also got to clean out the oil pump screen and take a look deep into the engine and crankcase which are places that I dare not tread.

I don't know the answer to the question, but I do know that trying to say: "Shift Shaft Seal" three times fast is bloody difficult! :D
