I’m looking at a 94 348 and it has a spot where there is some clear coat peeled off above the base red. My 89 Mondial T has no clear coat. Is this evidence of a repaint or did they switch to base/clear in the early 90s?

    Thank you

They should be single stage up until 96-97 F355 was when it was changed to clear over base.

^ Agreed, unless metallic? (thought all metallic colors were clear coated)

Great information, thank you for responding. Isn’t that what that looks like to you, clear coat coming off?

I don’t suppose you know if the Euro GTB’s maybe had 2 stage paint?

That looks like rosso corsa so non metallic.

I can't think of any reason why euro cars would have clear coat earlier than any other market so I would expect it to be single stage.

Buy/borrow a paint meter as the thickness in different areas may be revealing.

Given the area where the problem is I would speculate it was refinished for a buttress crack repair and they used clear over the red.

Not on the 355’s. You should see silver 95 355s :).

That has been repainted... As others have said most likely panel shop that did it did not know not to use a clear. Most likely cracking from the butress/roof section where it meets rear 1/4 panel
