The P1’s have also increased a lot in value (like almost everything). A million more expensive than in mid 2020. The market is crazy

Main reason for the "market crazyness" are the negative interests at your bank.
As long as my bank charges me negative interests for my cash I rather buy something substantial, such as a classic car, painting, art, etc.
Then I have at least something solid that I can even enjoy (or drive!).
There's plenty of people with cash, tons of cash, that needs to be invested somehow. Without negative interests.

0619 GT, a 3 louvre TdF chassis number swapped from/with 0805 GT. Not a criticism but an interesting facet to the car’s history.

I have argued exactly this for almost 20 years. When interest rates drop to less than 1% and inflation is relatively high why bother with traditional investing. All we need now is for the stock markets to take a tumble and it is down but not that far down. The post 1987 car speculation boom and the 2010-2015 classic car market expansion both saw 100% increases in market prices in certain years. Both also saw low confidence in traditional investments, low interest rates and massive amounts of excess liquidity looking for homes. That said we have never seen the effects of Crypto and NFTs which will surely suck up all the fools gold types. Why not buy a few Ferrari or Monet's? Anyone want to bet when the first $100 million GTO transaction will go down?

Yes but you can still get wonderful work for good prices, because it's still being made. And each is unique. I wish people wouldn't keep on comparing cars to art, nothing to do with one another.

I wish people would stop looking and/or treating vintage cars as “investments” and especially those who don’t even have the cars nor money to acquire them.
Just a bunch of blowhard wannabe speculators.

I believe that at least two GTOs have sold in the $60 - 70 million range while several others have topped $50 million.

There is little else that could or should get near a GTO price wise, maybe 330P4 #0856 or a 250TR (perhaps the Le Mans winning #0728TR or 0772/4?). The only non Ferrari I can think would come near this price point would be the original Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (which Rolls will never sell), the very best Alfa Romeo 2.9B (which are all in museums), a Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows or maybe a SSK. And that's it. Should the market continue to reach new heights I would bet against a $100 million GTO within the next 3 years.

Not trying to be a pedant but the "original Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (which Rolls will never sell) was sold a well known collector in 2019 but has to remain in the UK as a condition of the sale. Needless to say no price was disclosed. Cheers, Damien

I had to look that up and yes Volkswagen have sold it, for $75 million USD in 2019 to an American, which would make it probably the most expensive car ever sold. Lawrence Stroll did sell the 330P4 #0856 in 2020 for an unknown sum and its the sole original 330P4. I remembered the rumour the Preston Henn 275GTB Competizione was available at a equal level of $70 - 80 million.

In a world where a NFT can fetch $92 mil, an incomplete 100,000 sqf Beverly Hills home for $141 million, a gold plated boat can fetch $5 billion (does anyone believe this ****?), a private Airbus A380 for $500 million and a might be da Vinci $450 million why not a $100 million or even a $200 million car. At some point its only money ........

60-551 was reported as going to Bruce McCaw in the classic mags but not so AFAIK... the buyer was based in Hong Kong but keeps the car in the UK alongside some very important old Ferraris. Cheers, Damien

As an aside Autosport forums has a hilarious forum covering the time back around 2001-2008 where the then CEO of M-B (Prof. Jurgen Hubbert) agreed to sell Bruce M a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, which was surely fine since they own six of them and can only display one in the museum. The deal included Bruce finding a G4 (the big six wheeler) and bizarrely selling the 500/540K Autobahnkurrier to raise the funds (touch of Elon Musk buying twitter). These sundry transactions took a year or so as various experts and agents ferried between four locations and M-Bs Managing director stepped down. As so often happens the new CEO stepped away from the deal and Bruce M was left with a gaping hole where the Autobahnkurrier shoulda been, a G4 he didn't want and no SLR so sued. Its unclear exactly whether he got his 300SLR but I believe one was at least on long term loan if not actually sold to him............ Its a wonderful insight into collecting at this level of the market. Asset taxes are so high in certain states and countries that swaps are probably the equal of the traditional sales market. Anyway the lawsuit makes for hilarious reading.

Yes, agreed, and this is my underlying point. Anyone want to call a car "art" because they think it's pretty, fine, call it so, but in the end I'm talking about a E30 M3 being sold at 255k because these speculators are trying to push mass made cars as a place to park money for a while - because the difficult stuff to buy/sell (the ones people call art) is beyond their reach. It sucks, and those who would otherwise be able to enjoy the great activities related to actually driving cars are left with less and less to drive.

    how can one pay for a M3 255k US$?
what is so special on this car for this money? it was a mass production car, no limited serie

the rpice for this car new has been in germany about 85.000 €

if it would be a cecotto serie I would understand the price

    It's a sport evo. It still shouldn't command 6 figures. It's an E30 BMW.

I have never found the E30 m3 to be an attractive car. It is unique and kind of cool, but pretty it is not. To me the ultimate incarnation of the M3 will always be the E36. 200x the car in every way and far more beautiful. There was a time in my life when I lusted after those cars but that time came and went. M3 BMW's are for the 20 something year old punk who is just starting to make it in the real world. I still respect and like the car, but no longer want it.

Whenever these kids approach me while I'm out and about in my E38 I cringe.
