Hello, I just purchased my Ferrari 488 GTB and I have been driving it in sport mode. What is the difference with race mode? Will it make it louder?

Louder sooner. Valves open at 2500 if I recall correctly. I always had mine in Race mode with the bumpy road button engaged.

    It makes everything more aggressive.

    - Throttle Response
    - Exhaust
    - Traction Control (Be Careful)
    - Steering
    - etc.

Also, more aggressive shifts in Race mode. Pin the bypass valves open and enjoy the symphony throughout the RPM range.

I only drive mine in race mode so far, and first thing I do is turn off auto. I don’t really see the use for wet and sport vs race for the fun factor. Maybe if I was DD it or long haul, but I just drive it for the fun factor, and race sure is fun! I also haven’t tracked yet to turn the dial the other way…

City driving - sport (big difference in fuel economy in my 458)

    Spirited - race mode!

I seem to be in the minority of seldom using the bumpy road mode. Most of my routes are in fairly good shape.

Stay away from race mode on track. It will destroy your rear brake rotors. Best to go CT OFF as soon as possible. If you lack experience on track, still go CT OFF as you’ll have an instructor to guide you.

Have a read of the owner manual- there are many parameters that are affected. The short take away is use sport mode when getting to know the car and once you do know it, maybe its a good every day, driving in town mode. Race is more for when the conditions permit and you have the confidence to press on. Agree about on the track, but if you are new to the car and the track, Id leave it there until you are familiar with the car. Dont be too proud to use wet mode if the roads get slick or even if they are cold and you find yourself out there. The Manettino dial is like a clock, turn it from wet clockwise to ESC off and you are going from the most safe to most spicy.

From memory these are the parameters that are affected:

SCM (Damper stiffness): 3 levels. 0 is in wet mode and is also the bumpy road mode level. 1 is in sport mode, if you press bumpy road button you get 0. Race, CT and ESC off is 2- the most stiff. This can make the steering feel like its got more weight, but they have not changed the steering weighting.

ABS: (anti lock brake aggressiveness): I think there are 2 or 3 levels. Race will wait a little longer than sport before it starts anti locking (I think)

EDiff: (electronic differential): how aggressive does it get. I think there are 5 levels. Race is more aggressive than sport, and CT off is more aggressive still.

DCT: (shift speed and aggressiveness): I forget how many levels there are

F1Trac: (predictive stability control): how quickly it intervenes. Quite amazing, its based on their racing experience and it takes all sorts of data inputs and predicts how things are going and what it should do with the other systems to help you.

ESC: traditional stability control, running there in the background.

The thing to remember about Ferrari is they setup the car differently than most others. They are looking to support you in having fun, where as the other company systems are usually just looking to keep you safe, so the Ferrari systems will give you more leeway if they think you know what you're doing. It means you really have to pick the right mode for the circumstances.

Also they dont list it but I do think they alter the engine map, so if you are very low on fuel, you could drop it into wet mode and I think you will burn the least amount possible. I think you will feel this as a difference in throttle sensitivity between wet, sport and race modes- though its really not throttle sensitivity, its the engine map.
