Well....no takers on the left side rear air extractor, so it goes in the trash. How about a pair of elastic straps for the spider convertible top? I have two extra sets from some I had made a year ago. First come, first served - the first two responses here will get a set. If you are one of those, please send me an email to < [email protected] > with your address and I will get them in the mail Mitch
I need a set of straps for my 355 spider. Please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 541 914 3227. Thank you, Lowell Swartz
I can measure them, but they are for the 355 top. Both pairs are taken. Thanks guys....I will get them in the mail to Greg and Lowell. Mitch
I would appreciate that. I have made a few and they don't seem to work. Thinking mine are too long. Thanks.
A hint for those diving into elastic band replacement: Use the FULLY STRETCHED length of the old band measured against the FULLY STRETCHED new material to get the length right. There's no other way that I can see to properly measure elastic bands.
My old straps cannot be used to any measurement. I used Ratarossa's (Scott) top video length of 10.5 inches and they do nothing to move the bar rearward. Thinking I would make another set with shorter length. Mitch, were you able to get these to work properly for you?
I have had no issues - I replaced mine every other year and gave several sets to other F-Chat members. The material is used is 1" ribbed elastic Total usable length unstretched is 8.5" (there is .5" at one end where it is not stitched together...the other end is looped...if that makes sense) Total length stretched is 17.5" (pulling them as hard as I can) I hope that helps.....
SUCCESS...FINALLY! Made a few of these that did not work at all, and after some research and help from FChatters, it works! The Dritz brand braided elastic from JoAnn Fabric (below) DID NOT work for me (AMHIK): Image Unavailable, Please Login There are three basic types of elastic: braided, knit, and woven. Braided is the weakest of all and is easily identified by its vertical ribbing. Braided elastic gets narrow when stretched. Knit elastic is smooth in appearance and does not get narrow when stretched. The strongest is woven with vertical and horizontal ribbing. It also does not get narrow when stretched, and is the strongest you can buy. I tried a variety of lengths with the JoAnn braided to no avail. The top bow would not move rearward. Finally, using 1" wide woven elastic, total unstretched length of 8.25", the bow moves rearward and the top is in the proper position, ready for lowering. No more walking around to each side to manipulate the bow.
Please excuse my ignorance, but can you let me know what/where these straps are used? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
If you go to 10:00 on this video, all will be explained. Scott (Ratarossa) recommends a total length of about 10" but 8.25" was best for me. Best of luck! Also, a great video with lots of great information. Enjoy!
Great! Thank you. Good to know. I’m new to the spider realm so any and all info about this too is helpful. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Would you have a picture of the woven elastic? Here's some woven elastic available near me, but it's hard to tell if it has vertical and horizontal ribbing https://www.spotlightstores.com/sewing-fabrics/haberdashery/elastics/birch-woven-elastic/80211118
The material from Spotlightstores looks very similar to what I used: Image Unavailable, Please Login What I took out had no more stretch and was tied up in a knot...LOL
Tell you what I did. First, I never removed the old elastics. I bought some new elastic from Joann's Fabric along with these. I made new straps with snaps on the ends. Wrapped then around the old elastics and snapped them in place. Being snapped in place I could early remove them and shorten them if necessary, but I guessed right on the length the first time.
Here is a picture of one of the straps. Just position around the the old strap and snap. Work perfect for the last 8 years. And yes, its standard Dritz 1" elastic. Rather than replacing the old straps these augment the the pull of the old ones. Image Unavailable, Please Login
