I will also note I have independent confirmation that a client of an unnamed friend was indeed an invitee so I know the story of the lunch is legit. May 19th is the day Mercedes-Benz does the press release to officially announce!

Rumor: Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow sold for record $142 million
    Hagerty Insider

Sources tell us one of the two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupes” ever made – a hardtop version of the legendary W196S racing cars – has sold for a record sum. James Lipman
Note: This is a developing story that includes informed speculation—details may prove inaccurate.

Reset the search engines and reset your memory—the record for the most expensive car ever sold is believed to have been smashed, without a Ferrari in sight.

Rumors from multiple Hagerty sources suggest that Mercedes-Benz, the company that brought us the first motor car—Karl Benz’s Patent-Motorwagen of 1886—has sold one of its treasured Silver Arrow racing cars for 135 million euros (£115 million; $142M).

If confirmed, it would mean that the allure of one of the German marque’s most significant racing cars has powered nearly three times the value of the Ferrari 250 GTO that sold at Monterey in 2018, and more than twice the rumored $70M (£52M) paid for another GTO private sale in 2018.

    James Lipman
The seller, on behalf of Mercedes-Benz, presented around 10 (possibly fewer) carefully selected car collectors who were not only wealthy enough to bid but would satisfy the strict criteria laid down by the German car manufacturer. The company wanted to ensure that any custodian of the Silver Arrows racing car would lavish it with the same care and attention as Mercedes, as well as continue to share the car at events and not sell it on to a third party.

Potential buyers are believed to have been hosted over lunch at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, in Stuttgart with key collectors flying in on private jets on May 6. The grand venue was closed that day for “an event” and is due to open again on May 15.

$17,437,926.18 per cylinder. Not a bad ROI for Mercedes.

I not know the weight of the car, but I think gold is cheaper to buy?
1 kg gold is now around 56.000 €

Gold is around $1811/oz USD....so, Uhlenhaut Coupe is approximately 39,408 ounces at 2,463 pounds.

Gold weight of the car is $71,367,888. Car's "sale" value is roughly double that, so gold is a bargain. The Uhlenhaut Coupe's value is staggering.

The price record is going to be tough to beat.

From a Ferrari fan POV, I'd say either 06885 or 0008M would reach similar figures if they ever come to the market.

And like many have mentioned before, let's not forget that 0856 and 0684 were recently sold; their price probably didn't reach 9 figures but I'd guess they weren't that far off. Both cars are unique (as in, there's only one P4 remaining, same thing with the 315S) and they have great racing history.

I wasn't aware that #0684 had been sold but the sale of #0674 should peg it at no more than say $70 million. #0856 remains an unknown due to it being the final original example of arguably the best looking Fezza although when #0858 was offered back in 2008/9 it was for low GTO money so again an argument for $70 - 80mm can be made. #0008m sold back in 1990 as a car needing a mother of all restorations but Barrett-Jackson wanted $2 million for it, roughly 25% of a GTO in 1990 money and despite its history it was and remains a rather underpowered and comparatively uncool car vis a vis a Testa Rossa/ GTO. #06885 has been for sale as part of Preston Henns receivership and a dealer was advised figures of over $75mm would be sought for it. It is effectively the successor to the 250GTO and the only one of three built to race, winning its class at Le Mans and kept in highly original condition etc.

Where the Uhlenhaut Coupe scores points is that M-B sold it for charity (supporting the people of Ukraine) and it is an unrepeatable opportunity. So if a very special 250TR, 250GTO, perhaps #06885 or #0856 came up for a charity sale in public and it became a way for a billionaire to get some publicity by donating money then it could hit these levels. At a certain point I would argue that this sale was more a public donation with a car thrown in.

I already argued that THE Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, a Mercedes Silver Arrows, SSK, Alfa Romeo 8C2900B and perhaps these handful of Ferrari COULD hit the $100mm level (we now know that THE Silver Ghost did sell for $75 mm) and would add

    - Bugatti Type 57G that won Le Mans in 1937 (its owned by Simeone and he isn't a seller)
    - Bentley Blower Blue Train Coupe (it was bought by McCaw back in the 1990s for GTO money)
    - Benz Blitzen (the last original pre WW1 aero engine monster extant, owned by a US senator who isn't known to sell anything pre war)
    - Ford GT40 #1075 (won Le Mans in 1968 & 1969, owned by Rob Walton who doesn't need the money)
    - Porsche 917K #023 (won Porsches first Le Mans in 1970, last sold for GTO money)

And that still only makes roughly 30 - 40 cars extant that could ever reach this price level and while most owners are now elderly their cars are in trusts, museums or otherwise never going to be sold. Fun times. Roll on Monterey

Blitzen Benz is a 1908 and owned by Bill Evans of San Diego.
Oregon (state, not US) Senator (retired), George Wingard has both a 1908 Grand Prix Mercedes and a 1914 Grand Prix Mercedes (among other rarities).
I think the 1914 car would be the one that would be the big enchilada of these three, price-wise.

Multiple Blitzen Benz came to the USA for Ernie Moross and others although most returned (in worn out condition) to either Daimler-Benz or were sold to the UK where they raced at Brooklands into the 1920s and even 1930s. Evans claimed to have found most of a Blitzen Benz in the USA and approached Daimler-Benz who he had a very close relationship with having restored their Blitzen Benz. Back in 1936 Mercedes-Benz took two modified Blitzen Benz and rebuilt the best parts into one car for a Berlin expo. The spare chassis was apparently sold to Evans and restored per the lessons learnt by restoring the Daimler-Benz museum car. Ludvigsen notes the originality issues with both the Daimler Benz museum and Evans cars although they are both legit Blitzen Benz. The Wingard car was built as a unique road car and used as such until the mid 1920s when it was in the UK and raced at Brooklands for nearly a decade. It was only saved by passing to one family who owned it from the mid 1930s until 2000/01 when the last of the brothers died and Charles Howard sold it to George Wingard for circa $2 mil. It retains the same components it left the Motherland with and was only saved by being a large tourer rather than a racecar per se. I understand the Evans car may now have been sold to Germany where it is in the Sinsheim Museum although this isn't 100% confirmed.

As you noted Wingard not only owns the 1914 French GP winning Mercedes but also the only truly original French GP 1908 Mercedes and unique original examples of Edwardian Fiat GP cars and 1920s Ballots and more. You could be right. Wingard is 86 and as they say time waits for no man so it will be interesting to see what he or his family do with the collection.

As a New Zealander the US political system makes little sense to me so I plead the fifth.

Just to make the distinction that all state government (excepting Nebraska) have a bicameral legislative body, the smaller of which being a 'Senate.'
Mr. Wingard- rightfully so- is referred to as Senator Wingard for his years of service in Oregon's state Senate.

More commonly in the US, when we refer to someone as 'Senator' it is indicative of them being a member of the US (federal rather than state) government body- The United States Senate consisting of 2 Senators from the 50 states, so 100 in total.

Tim you only need to assert your 5th Amendment (US Constitution) privilege if you're afraid that the testimony you are providing to a US court (or the United States Congress) may implicate you in a criminal act.
Here on Ferrarichat the only crime in Vintage is repainting your original-colored Fcar in Rosso Rivendita.

You're in the clear, mate! :p

I last have #0774TR selling back in 2004 for $12 mm which compares well with the $10 mm a M-B W154 sold for in 2000, $12+ mm bid for perhaps the best GTO (#4293GT) in late 2000, $4.4 mm for a Shelby Daytona Coupe in 2001, $5.6 mm for the unique 412MI in 2006, 412S #0596CM sold at RM in 2001 for $3.8 mm, Kogan sold #0704TR for around $5 mm in 2004 and so on and so forth. $12 mm sits about right for a beautiful Testa Rossa that won the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours. In todays money that would fetch $70 - 90mm if GTO prices and comparators are anything to go by.

If pushed to guess #0856 and #0684 would be a measly $50 mm. Money found down the back of a billionaires couch lol. It does paint an interesting picture of what could be worth north of $100mm and its a very small set of cars, 20?, 30?

Perhaps you know of a more recent sale for #0774TR?

A portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol sold recently for 195 million dollars.

Warhol hand painted a BMW M1.

I think there might be a couple of people who collect both cars and art who would pay mucho dinero for that particular car. Not 9 figures, but a lot of money. Enough to make it into one of these lists....
