LOL, how so? Mick scored zero points whereas Lance had 40 points and a podium in his first F1 year. And if you extend that into their respective 2nd year (since you count 28 races) Stroll scored again vs so far zero by Mick. And I could even argue that the current Haas is a lot better than the Williams Stroll drove in his second year. Not trying to derail from the Monaco thread but since somebody bothered to ask for the comparison.
WT-? They changed all those corners? Were we supposed to know this was happening? They made everything tighter save for Casino being larger radius turn. They really want SC festival, I see.
So they updated the chicane after the tunnel? Also, I see differences with the pool section. I thought that the pool section had the best change of direction set of corners in the whole calendar. From the picture, it doesn't look like they'd be able to replicate that. They should augment the layout it in corner 18 like I've seen in sketches. There is not much to improve to the rest.
forget the points, the Williams Stroll drove in his first season was FAR better than any machinery Mick has gotten thus far. Stroll benefitted from a testing programme where he drove an old chassis (but hybrid engine) for well over a seasons' worth of KM, Mick has not. Stroll looked totally inept in those races. Yes he scored points here and there and even that podium, but inept all the same. He rarely had an idea what was going on. I think it was Monaco 2018 when he hit the wall, then came on the radio a few corners later asking if his car was ok. He had a massive flat. He didn't have a clue what was going on. I know you like to defend him but to call his early races a success is far fetched. Good enough driver now, mind you.
They took out ½ of the swimming pool section ?!? They changed the approach to the hairpin ?!? They altered the chicane ?!? And took part of the kink out of the uphill run ?!? Does not seem possible. Perhaps just bad artwork.
You are right that the Williams in that year was a midfield car. Probably comparable to what Mick drives this year (going by the results KMag gets with it). Mick was Alfa and Haas F1 test driver for a year Actually Mick looked pretty unapt last year and this year at several occasions. FWIIW: Blick's Benoit (F1 journo since the seventies) recently wondered publicly why Mick gets so much benefit of the doubt when it is fairly obvious that he isn't cutting it. But it's true that German speaking F1 TV commentators like Ralf Schumacher (ok, that's obvious) and Marc Surer (less so) never dare to criticize him. Especially not after what he did at Miami to his mentor. No, not saying that. But defending him against your comment that Mick was better in his first 28 races. I disagree. Both were not great. Thanks. True for Mick too. They all know how to drive or they wouldn't have a super license. And I'm not a Mick hater. I like the guy and hope he'll turn it around soon. So far not looking good and probably ending up in DTM. We'll see.
It's unfortunate that because of the name people did put too much expectations on his shoulders. Mick did well in F2 the second year, but F1 is a completely different ballgame altogether. I think the dream some had to see him in a Ferrari has been shattered (if they are honest that is). I cannot see many teams who would recruit him, and how long will Ferrari pay for his seat at Haas ?
Agreed on all. He was a late bloomer in F2 and then was rushed into F1 too soon. The name is now a burden but at the beginning of his career it opened doors (I know he used another name) and the $ was certainly there. For the life of me I don't get the Ferrari connection. They should drop him. It's just sentimental value at this time.
Disagree on both. Both have a super license which means the FIA sees them as F1 material. Not everybody is a winner in the field. There are gentlemen driver (have been since the inception of the sport) and journey men. Nothing wrong with that. In fact I always liked the cavalier attitude of some. No wonder I was always an Eddie Irvine fan. A grid has 20 cars and 20 drivers. They're not all top tier material. And that's ok.
Not everyone can be Max or Alonso. Schumacher and Stroll both have their time in F1. At their current level they deserve to have their shot. If in their time they don't make it, so be it...then it'll be someone elses time. At the first 2 years of Stroll's career, his time couldn't end soon enough. Yes his time will be longer than others due to his dad owning the team...so be it. There are worse than him on the current grid right now, so by that notion already he's not holding up the next great ones' seat. Yet...
I find today's public over critical when it comes to F1 drivers, even cruel. In the past we had drivers making a career in F1 without any result. I don't remember reading some of the damning opinions we see now. On top of my head Gregory 8 years in F1, de Cesaris, Warwick, Hulkenberg 11 years, Heifeld 12 years, etc .... I couldn't fin a win, nor a podiumfor those, yet they were respected, as many others. Privater Jo Bonnier drove at the back of the field for years: he was the GPDA President.
Yes, there's even a website dedicated to the never-were. And that's ok too. Not everybody is going to be a WDC or winner.
Another way to put this is: His dad wants Lance in F1, therefore he bankrolls the team. That gives somebody else a chance to have the other seat. If his dad loses interest, the team will fold (hopefully not but get sold to a car company or another Stroll/Latifi/your-favorite-billionaire-here). So lets hope dad and son are in this for some years to come. Personally I really miss the 24 cars grid. I heard that some of the current teams are not happy with getting another team (#11) in; probably because the money pot gets more divided. But as somebody who remembers pre-qualifying (especially at Monaco) I would love to see what I consider a full grid again: 24 cars
Part of you not remembering seeing the damning opinions is because we didn't have the internet where anybody with a keyboard can be an arm chair expert.

Of course they are not all top tier. But this is a sports chat site about F1. So we talk about it. It kills the time in-between races.
While we wait for Monaco check out the newly released (?) albeit very old, documentary on Juan Manuel Fangio on YT Its about 20 min long and all of it is composed of historic race videos 1959 Documentary "Tribute to Fangio" by Periscope Film
I can’t agree more. I’d give both of my testicles to be good enough to drive in F1 much less be able to drive in F1 for a full season. How amazing would that be?
