Pre qualifying at Monaco was great. there were not that many people around way more relaxed you could stay in the paddock - pit lane and watch pre qual... And what i liked was that all the team managers and drivers would come out and watch... you could see them watching and talking... with not much press around. the only Journalist I alwasy saw was Jenks...he was always there smoking and kind of stinky.

My favorite time in Monaco was 1989 and 1990. The sound of the cars was great! in 1993 it was pretty spectacular as well. Senna always looked slow ( I usually was watching from behind Rascasse right on the pit straight for practice and qualifying and then up the road from st. devot for the race - but he was always the fastest.. so smooth in Monaco. I will give him his due he mastered that track.

I know... but you take what you can get.... We do Billions in business with one of their sponsors... The Ferrari guys did not like it at all when doing a pit tour I saw one of the guys I know who invited me into the garage... it was all eyes on the Merc guy!

My favourite 2 corners to watch is Tabac and the first swimming pool. My god the speed through that is absolutely immense. No street track replicates that.
Yeah I gathered it was a business event...no biggie of course ;)

Charles with a bit of a nice dig about Red Bull's team orders, I like his attitude that he can do the job even alone as long as the team provides the car:

“Red Bull made it clear what their intentions are and they did it very early in the season.

“But concerning us, I don’t know. I haven’t spoken about it with Mattia and I haven’t heard about anything of this for now.

“I think for Carlos it’s just a matter of time before he gets with us and that he gets more at ease with the car.

“But I don’t want to rely on that either. I just want to do the job in the car.

“If we are strong enough, we have already shown that we can win races anyway.

With a team mate like Sainz LeClerc doesn't need to worry about team orders. Sainz basically invented bad luck.

Right. One of the oldest sayings among race fans is that the fast guys look slow and slow guys look fast. The only exception would be Gilles, but quite often he looked and an accident waiting to happen.

True. Everyone believes that Gilles was always on the ragged edge. Often he was but I watched him hustle a CanAm car round Watkins Glen. He was absolutely smooth and went up and down through the gears like a maestro.
Prost was just uncanny. He would appear to be merely circulating whilst breaking the lap record.

I'm impressed by your memories! I was there in 1979/1980 and struggle to remember much - other than my own car breaking down on the way back to England!

The trophy comments reminds me of HAM a few years ago complaining about the Silverstone trophy. Oh well, different strokes for different folks. The trophies like the one Coulthard is holding above (big punch bowl, or cup) always looked like they are from 1922 or something.

"Max has been coached through the prism of experience and seems to be surpassing what Jos achieved." "...seems to be surpassing..." just made me laugh!

There is an amazing onboard video of Prost in his Renault days around the old long Zandwoort threading his way in practice through the peasants like an eel through olive oil, it's on YouTube. Sooo smooth...

Gilles and Ronnie were probably the only 2 guys that could slide a car around and still be faster than anyone else.
