    Hi everyone,
I'm asking for some advice. I am looking to move from NY to GA and I have multiple vehicles that are of considerable value. One specifically, a 2019 812SF.

I have already been overly taxed by NY for this car and now it looks like I will be taxed again by GA tens of thousands, plus my other vehicles. It doesn't seem right to be taxed twice because it's not a new purchase. If this is the case, it would be cost effective to do the Montana thing.

With that said, can anyone shed any light or experience with this? Also, any GA residents who have done the Montana LLC? If so, do Police target you?

Georgia has specifically been cracking down on Montana registered exotics. Register it in neighboring Alabama, no double taxation and relatively low renewal fees. It would also be less likely to draw suspicion I would think. Florida would be even better as I believe there is no annual property tax on vehicles (if I remember right).

While no one likes to pay tax, registration inconsistencies may be a red flag for insurance not to pay in case of an accident. In Ga after the one time TAVT, renewing is just $20/yr.

Let’s just say I’m a GA attorney and I decided not to do it. The authorities here don’t like it.

Duly noted and thank you. Based on the responses I have received, I am not going to do it.

Here’s something you all might find very interesting:

If you live in Georgia and buy a car that is:

    a. 25 years’ old or older (as of this moment a 1997 model year or older)

    and

    b. purchased from a *private party* as opposed to a dealer

…then your registration tax is calculated at a flat rate of …… $6.

    Six. Measly. Dollars.

It’s true. I just did it this week at my county DMV. I was told that if my car had been either younger than 25 years’ old *or* purchased from a dealer, then it would have cost several thousands to register the car.

    Talk about a sweet loophole.

Must be a new thing, because almost 5 years ago this year, they took me for 6% of purchase price (private sale) on my 348. 1989+25=2014. I bought in 2017...

or it's because the car was previously registered in FL...that must be why...

You get a title for older cars in GA if you turn in an out of state title with the initial GA registration. They do not issue titles if you don't already have one from out of state. I have quite a few older muscle cars and they cost about $3.50 per year in taxes plus the additional fees for the personalized plates.

Mississippi's car tax is 5% but drops to a flat rate of around $35 after the vehicle is ten years old. I agree that we all pay too much in taxes and the flat rate saved me a nice little chunk of change on my 360.

GA state police have been told to follow any Montana plated car a bit. And if they make teh smallest moving violation-like not signaling for a lane change, veering across yellow line, following too closely car ahead of you, they pull you over and really work you over on plates, residence, etc.

(have buddy in attorney generals office and told me this.)

They are getting very tough/strict on this stuff.

How would Alabama let you register it here if you don't live or work here?
