Slightly easy answer. Jon Shirley won Pebble Beach twice over the past decade with both his Alfa Romeo 8C2.9B and #0402AM. In 2021 he sold them to Europe (Italy via Simon Kidston?) and in return got a 8C2300 Monza and an unknown sum of cash. The deal was certainly not large enough to value it at anywhere near $100mm. The fact remains is despite being fabulous cars even the 375 Plus is simply not that valuable with even the 375 Plus offered at Bonhams in 2014 fetching $20 mm USD. So even if we take a growth in the market of 100% and another value modifier because the 375 Plus had issues (100%) we end with $80 mm. Meanwhile 375MM can be pegged by the ex Kimberly Pininfarina Spider selling for $9.075 mm in 2013 and the Ghia Coupe offered at RM in 2019 for between $5 - 7 mm. Either would require such an increase for quality and timing as to be preposterous. And for that matter the later 290MM, 315/335S and 250 Testa Rossa are all known as being very well engineered, road worthy and sexy as hell such as that cars made prior to 1956 and post 196 are at a disadvantage. I am guessing somewhere more like $30 - 40 mm are more realistic
If remember correctly, an amount around the $35 - 40 mm USD mark when sold in 2018. It was a far more specialized piece of kit than the Testa Rossa's and I cannot imagine anyone actually driving it on a road so much of the potential fun of ownership must be considered. As must a certain design angle and while I personally like the early P car styling it lacks the curvaceous beauty of Scaglietti's best work.
Mecum have announced their first lots for Monterey 2022 which are some mighty fine Marmons and a Ferrari 250GT Tour de France with stories (#0899GT). Failed at Bonhams in 2016 but for a value pick its hard to beat. That said Mecum are always expensive vis a vis the big three so possibly not that much value! https://www.mecum.com/lots/CA0822-520619/1958-ferrari-250-gt-tour-de-france-alloy-berlinetta/
This "0899 GT" has been shopped around the planet for six years now. The red book states "complete new engine produced by Ferrari Classiche/Ferrari SpA in 2012", GP12, 128 C, 0354 C. "GP" stands for "Genuine Parts" and the "12" is the year 2012 when the new engine was built. New body built 1987 to 1990, new body rectified by Classiche in 2012. Differential non matching. A second car using the same number "0899 GT" exists in France. Marcel Massini
TDF time in Monterey? There will be no fewer than three (3) 250 GT LWB TDF Berlinettas available at the various auctions in Monterey this August. I wonder if this is good or bad? Scratching my head...... Marcel Massini
It's a tricky one. With the downturn in the worlds stockmarkets (S&P 500 down 19% since the SOTY, NASDAQ down 28%) there will be a lot of cash money searching for a relatively liquid home. OTOH does three of the same car offered over a weekend flood the market? I would guess not in this case since they will be quite different cars with different appeals. #0899GT needs to be sold for whatever its worth and as an entry level TdF with obvious needs (as noted) but also a ticket to all but the very best events both a hard sell and potentially a good buy but at perhaps 30-50% discount from a good example. Say $3 - 3.5 mil would make it a good buy and get rid of the thing. Its Mecum so it could fetch more, especially if the bar is open long enough?
I was thankfully talked out of it by a very respected fchatter - so the search and journey will continue !
Much excitement over the last few days with Gooding announcing the Bill Wonder collection of mainly sports racing cars, Bonhams also announcing various interesting cars. RM has trumped all though with the announcement of the Masterworks of Design collection. This collection seems to have some connection to the Blackhawk museum in Danville, California. Indeed much of this collection has been a mainstay of Bonhams auctions over the past five or so years and certainly the Alfa 8C, Bucciali and Mercedes have all been displayed in the museum and offered by both. Here they afford RM a third evening and perhaps 30 cars that should hit the million dollar mark. I haven't included Mecum who remain somewhat oblique with their offerings but the highlights (anything reasonably expected to sell for over a million) so far announced are: 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C1750GS 8513025 Bonhams 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C2300 2311212 RM 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C2300B 915053 RM 1955 Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Berlinetta 130800891 RM 1975 Alfa Romeo 33/TT/12 ?
