Contractually bound I'm guessing? Nonetheless somebody please shoot it. Two heart attacks waiting to happen. A chip off the old block.
That's the amazing part. If you told the designers back in 1909 that cars would someday be lapping the track at over 230 mph, with NO changes in dimensions, they would almost certainly have believed that to be impossible!
This is going back a few days (okay---years) when speeds were first approaching 230 MPH for a lap, I remember Sam Posey saying that he thought cars would in future lap Indy at an average speed above 250 MPH. For safety and other reasons, the rules have made that impossible now. I didn't watch qualifying, but I'm guessing that cars are approaching 240 MPH between the 4th corner and the first, and between two and three, depending on a tailwind.
True. What amazes me is the small differential between straight line speed and cornering speed. They are losing only 10mph or so through the turns. Requires large attachments as David Hobbs would say.
F1 drivers who won the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. This list is longer than I thought! https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/f1-drivers-who-have-won-the-indy-500/6516016/
there's probably more from the 50's when Indy was a round of the F1 championship (they mentioned Roger Ward, but I'm sure there are others, just too lazy to look it up) some of the prewar guys from Europe probably ran "Grand Prix" before it was an official world championship too.
per Bryan Herta, that car is junk, they're going to a backup car (and engine). also apparently they keep their grid spot, but he's starting on row 9 anyway Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date
Kanaan leads carb day with a Ganassi 1-2-4 https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/indy-500-kanaan-leads-ganassi-1-2-4-in-final-practice/10311946/
Alright . . . . who's going to win it? I'll go with Palou with a slight edge over Dixon. My dark horse pick would be Veekay.
they've both been fast (Karam was P5 today) and Karam has been unusually quiet and businesslike this month....27 years old now, this will be his 8th 500, and he had a good run last year. would still be a big upset for a single race team and driver, but he could pull it off if the stars align
2011 Final lap Hildebrand touch's the wall coming out of turn 4 slides all the way down the front straight to just under my feet in Ron's top of turn 1 best seat in the house. What ever happened to Ron? Guy, didn't you get that seat one year?
I guess that Herta will have no chance to test his replacement car before the race itself. So his first lap at speed will be the first lap of the race! That's a bit of a scary thought.
