Check out costco.com - new buys/products. They carry Moto Flooring, another snap together floor system. 900 sq feet should run you about $2400.00 if my calcs are close.

i used kiwi tile. you can beat them up on price big-time. beat them up.

I used peel and stick tiles from Home depot for 29 cents a piece. Another F-chatter also used them (Crawford) and has had no problems since the last time I talked to him about this.

any problems with heat from the tires discoloring or pulling them up?

 

Pat, I see you live in MN. Is that garage heated or does the floor get below freezing? How long have they been down? Did you degrease before installation?

Go to Home Depot & buy the Armstrong commercial asphalt tiles. They come in lots of colors, are unbreakable, somewhat easy to put down and the color goes all the way through so they probably won't wear out.

 

You will want to strip and remove as much of that coating as possible, as it will be a barrier against any new floor coatings adhesion. You could do an epoxy floor for much less than race deck. (I know the Behr product was epoxy, but if it was the 1 part stuff its not very good. You want a commercial grade epoxy, not a consumer grade.)

These coatings average around $1 per sq/ft do-it-yourself. Not as easy to install (as a snap together floor) but they do provide a SEAMLESS FLOORING, which is excellent for clean up. There was a thread on F-Chat a while ago by Duke, that discussed flooring and had pictures of his completed garage.

This project is just completed. My objective was to achieve this exact look. My delimma was the cold Wisconsin climate and a poorly laid floor that bled a lot.

I had an epoxy specialist come out and quote however he was honest enough to tell me that with the climate and floor I would being doing a lot of maintenance. Same if I painted. I then sampled adhesive tiles which didn't give me the look I wanted (sections too small) nor would they hold up with the dampness, water, snow, etc. So that took me to either Race Deck or Kiwi Tile.

After reviewing serveral Chatters comments and getting factory samples I opted for Kiwi Tiles ~ PERFORATED (13'' x 13'') and just love it. Yes the price point is higher but the tiles are very durable and from a maintanence standpoint very easy to clean. Now my space is approx. 650 sq ft. not quite as large as yours. Nonetheless I might recommend speaking to the Kiwi tile folks and see if you can get a discount given the amount of footage you need to cover. Sorry for the lengthy response but this is pretty fresh for me.

By the way prior to laying the floor I used Behr's concrete cleaner and then applied two coats of their concrete seal. That in itself made a huge difference with what was a ghastly floor. Good luck.

 

I have had no problems with heat from the tires or pulling up. Although I'm very ginger with the floor and don't beat on it. The car is really the only thing allowed on it. I told my wife she had to take her shoes off if she was going to walk on it (I'm sure you all could take a guess and what she told me)

 

Yes I do live in MN. The garage floor is not heated. I have had them down for almost 4 months and no problems yet but the winter will tell the tale. I didn't degrease. Since the house was brand new I washed the floor down with a heavy concentrate of sime green (per Crawford's recommendation)

 

They are 12 x12 each square has 4 little squares in it. I think I did about 400 sf and it cost me 130.00 after I got the trim moulding for the edges.

 

I have the perforated tiles. Liquids will go through them obviously, but it is simple for me to pull up a section of the floor if needed. One thing I noted about the perforated tile is that small debris falls through and, as a result, a lot less of the small particles get tracked into the house and car. It is also almost impossible to slip (as in fall) on the perforated tiles. While the plastic perforated tiles are tough they will stain and it is difficult to remove heavy grease from the raised parts in between the perforations. Overall, I am very happy with the tiles, but I should note that my view is somewhat colored by the fact that I bought them at an auction for a song. If I had to pay many thousands of dollars for them and I was not planning on ever moving, I think I would consider a more natural tile which had the appearance of stone or slate. I have seen many such tile floors posted here and they have a much more sophisticated appearance than the plastic. However, I don't know if the more natural stone like products would hold up well over time and if they would be susceptible to chips and cracks.

 

By the way Kiwi also offers a solid tile, the Diamond Grip. No perfs.

 

For real heavy use I don't know how they hold up. I wash my cars outside when I do it. My car doesn't need to get washed in the winter since it is all tucked in until spring. The thickness of them is about the same as the vinyl covering you would use inside and they are pretty flexible.

 

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned RustOleums (sp?) Epoxy kit. I used it a year and a half ago and its been flawless. Bought it at Home Depot. My friends have been so impresesed with its performance that they are putting it down in three more garages. I could supply pics if you would like.

I made a huge blunder and used the "Hot Trax" garage floor paint from Lowe's on new concrete (it had aged for about 12 weeks). This stuff does not stick AT ALL. It peeled off in great chunks, and it bubbles right off if you get any water onto it. Just terrible results. Don't know what I'll do to correct it.

 

Garage #1: I used the linoleum tiles. They got stains from tires, and were slick as goose snot when wet.

Garage #2: I used RackDeck. They looked OK, but made a cheap click clack sound when I walked on them - that sort of bothered me.

Garage # 3: I used 12" X 24" Italian Porcelain tiles. They made my garage look like a Ferrari dealer showroom. I used a light grout and should have sealed them better because I have a few stained areas. Overall I think it looks great though.
