With all due respect, Dr. Fung exaggerates the science. He has reasonable hypotheses, then exaggerates the degree of current support for those hypotheses. He cannot be fully trusted, but his ideas should be dismissed, or at least questioned, unless we have better evidence than we have now.

Some people call him a "quack" and I won't go that far, but many of this theories and ideas are simply not scientifically sound nor peer-review tested.

Of course you're entitled to follow anyone or anything at your choosing.

I just don't want to sidetrack this thread from OP's intended questions, but if Dr. Fung's mantra works for you then go for it but do so doing it with full and complete knowledge.

So I continue to walk about 12K steps a day, usually very early in the morning. Got a new pair of New Balance walking shoes but my feet still hurt. Just gotta play through it.

Yes, I have my diet under control and I've taken up the 18 hr fast idea about a week ago (which wasn't much of a change for me).

I gave up soft drinks years ago and don't drink. I rarely snacked. So, its tough for me to lose weight as I already have been doing for years what some people give up first. But I'm committed to this thing.

  3. Good for you.

Sounds like you are already on the right track.

If you haven't already, have you considered perhaps adding some resistance training into your weekly routine? Adding some muscle might help with just naturally increasing your resting metabolic rate.

Just FYI, but good on you!

Respect to you for making the change. That's always the hardest part.

We would all suggest truying resistance training, but only when you are 'ready'for it.
You are litterally taking your first steps here. it's already a massive improvemnt to waht you were previously doing.
I woulnd't suggest going all out from the start, slowly increasing what you are doing is the way to go.
And again, try to have fun with it and enjoy it. This needs to be a lifestyle change.

Whatever diet regiment you try or stick to, go with the one that worlks for yuou.
Fasting or not, keto, calories counting, low carb; they all work.

Double the kudo points for you for quoting Layno Norton!!!!! Great guy that is a down to earth 'scientist'. Love the fact that he questions everything, including himself and tries to be as unbiased as possible sometimes.
That whole calorie vs hormones has been debunked already.
It's another angle played form the masses.
"it's not your fault (because you eat like crap) it's your hormones".
    Yeah right!
10,000 years of evolution has something to say about that too....

Anyway if people feel Intermited fasting works for them, stick to it. Every diet works if you make it work.

Haven't changed my eating or walking habits for about 6 weeks now. Bought a scale and started weighing myself about 10 days ago. I have no idea how much weight I lost before but I know I dropped 2 inches on my belt buckle before starting walking.

I only weigh myself once a week. Since getting the scale, I've dropped 7 lbs. Not bad for 10 days.

Well done. I have a smart scale and I weigh myself daily BUT it plots a graphs so I only really pay attention to the trend. One important point about weighing yourself, do it the same time every day because weight changes a lot during a day.

I weight myself every few weeks or so, but the mirror and how clothes fit says so much more (but you already know that!)

Still sticking with it. Only lost about 1.5 lbs in a week but I think that's OK. What's interesting is I've been trying on a certain shirt each week that clearly was too tight but today it just about fits me.

Also the speed of walking 5 miles is up. I'm about 10 minutes faster now but it depends on the weather.

Progress! Maybe by the end of fall I might be close to the target.

He is a kidney specialist and I believe in what he says. There are others that also support his ways. Fact is in the late 70's early 80's Obesity wasnt an issue. It is now and the fact is its related to Insulin. Walk out your door and look at the people going by , they are fat . What has changed ?

You dont follow him or "He cannot be fully trusted " well I ask do you trust the CDC ? The pyramid triangle is correct ?

All great results. Its not only being trim but also fit. One doesn't need to look like a condom full of marbles to be fit. Actually I know someone that was skinny 50 yo and about 120 pounds and had a massive heart attack.

    Well done !

And you trust this turkey ? Who states "nothing inherently bad about HFCS" Keep dreaming that.

But he has his followers and many in Australia that think his way. Actually directly thats GREAT , not for their health but more for my bottom like as I make a killing on protein market. Its very profitable.

Respect. Yes your progress will start to slow down eventually, but look from where you have come!
Keep at it and you will get your end result.
How your clothes fit is a much, much better judge.

Some of the points he states are indeed valid. However he twists the science so it fits his message.
Never trust someone who has “ all the answers”. No one does.
All we can do is look at the science, real life results with a open mind and heart.

Regardless if he is a kidney specialist. That does not make him qualified.
Several of my friends (phd’s) actually have published papers on human metabolism. They have done the actual studies. Not quoting bits and pieces of it.

Yes, what is currently advised to the public on a global scale also isn’t healthy. The food pyramid also is outdated and not correct. That was drafted with several lobby groups behind it. Researchers know this, but there is too much money at stake here to illicit and big changes shortly.

Yes, insulin is not healthy if it is spiked and remains high. Yes your hormones are involved in a big way.
The human body is an incredible complex organism that has been honed over thousands of years into an evolutionary survival machine that has very little rivals. It’s only in the past few decades we humans have altered our environment in such ways that our bodies simply can’t cope. In short, we have too much easy access to food.

Whatever reasonable diet you follow that will make you loose weight is generally good. It’s the weight (fat) loss that’s healthy. I would always advocate a healthy dose of proteins, veggies and fruits. Leave either out and you could get deficiencies. Carbohydrates are a preferred fuel source, they are not mandatory for survival.

Being a kidney specialist certainly qualifies him to be an expert at what its causing kidney problems. With that it all goes back to insulin.

The food pyramid was / is still the biggest scam ever on the American population then followed by other countries. So lets continue with it for money stakes and kill the population. I value Jason, Berg and all the other specialists all claiming the fact its sugar and so called grain oils.

IF the American population just took this into account maybe the 2/3 of the population with prediabetes and or having diabetes wouldn't be an issue. But it is.

Its not that we have too much easy access to food BUT its the wrong food.

Sugar by far is our worst enemy and is the cause of so many ailments.

With regards to fat , the real issue is where that fat is. Around organs not good , the liver not good. On your ass no issue.

I would not go with total zero carbohydrates but I would add those that are the most beneficial which fat and protein cannot supply.

One thing that you and I will totally agree with is that everyone needs to be looking at their health. Medicines , tablets etc are bandaides.

If we look after our bodies we can expect much less visits to the doctors.

Let's agree to disagree on who's an expert or not.
I have an open nerve when a doctor claims to 'know it all' and is willing to twist the science.

I agree with everything else you state. Why wouldn't I? The science is clear, obesity is being caused by our changing consumption of to much coupeous food.
I'm on the lower carb fence as well. Eating between 25-50gram of carb sper day on average. Yes, people eat too many processed food with the majority being refined sugars.
If we would cut those out, most health issues would be a thing of the past. Obesity could even partialy cured.
But alas, Phillip Morris and Cocoa Cola amongst other have invested billions into 'convincing' and lobbying that we need sugar and that fat is the biggest enemy.
It is sugar, I wholeheartledly agree.
The food pyramid was also created in a time where that lobby was even stronger AND the science wasn't always clear.
In fact, a lot of our current ideas about healthy food are based on 'gut feelings' not actual science.
Nowadays we know better and a certain demograpic knows it too.

Politics is here the one party that is able to make a change; but again, the money involved is too strong.
Making healthy food cheaper than crappy food is an important factor as well as education.
In Europe you can buy healthy food like fruits and veggies soo much cheaper than fast food.
What's more tasty is anotehr topic, but fact remains healthy food is accessable and cheap.

We all are responsible for our own bodies. Some people lack the willpower or perhaps time and energy to make better choices.
Tough call for some to eat some cauliflower vs a big mac....
Hopefully this will change in the future.

OK! Another week down. Today's weigh in 3 lbs less than last week. I'm not exactly sure but I'm pretty close to my half way point from the start -- maybe another 2 weeks before I hit that point. Since the scale I've dropped 12 (something like 3.5 lbs a week on average).

No carbs but some meat, eggs, lots of veggies, some strawberries for desert and some olives. Intermittent fasting starting about 7 and ending about 1. 5 mile walk each morning. Apple cider vinegar and berberine supplements. Only water but some green tea and a black coffee for dinner.

If I can keep this up at this rate I will be at the target weight in 4 months.

Thanks for the update. I think you’re an absolute inspiration for a lot of silent readers here.
Excellent diet plan and it clearly works for you. Keep it up!

The berberine has virtually no use as you’re not consuming any meaningful amount of carbs. Berberine shuttles carbs beter into muscle cells and without the carbs it has very little use. You could feel light headed as your blood sugar could drop a bit.
If you use it as a means to clear the sugars from your system, I would keep the ACV and perhaps change the Berberine for other supplements if you are bent on using them.

Actually I'm rather curious if this idea that walking, combined with fasting, is better for weight reduction than running or anaerobic exercise. For sure I do not have an appetite which I tended to have with workouts. This makes it much easier to stick too. I plan workouts (in fact I'm adding HIIT starting today) but the main focus is towards a long term life style change rather than just shedding pounds.

So far it seems to be working. The disadvantage of walking is that it does take a lot of time per day.

Quite honestly, the best diet is the one you can stick with long term. So if you find that running increases your appetite a lot or makes it more difficult to stick to your diet, you could discard it. However the other side is that running does increase your metabolism a bit and thus you use/burn more calories and you can eat a bit more.
So it works both ways actually. You should do what feels best to you. Walking, running, HIT, weight training, etc.
But keep in mind that calories burnt/used during your walks are really not that much. It's your diet that's making the biggest impact.

From a health perspective, I would always suggest adding in weight training. In fact, weight training has now also been clearly shown to have signiuficant neuro protective qualities. recent studies have shown that doing squats, believe it or not, is better then doing puzzles, or what ever brain gymnastics, to enhance mental capabilities!

Very impressive. It sounds like you're through the hard part of getting in the rhythm. FWIW, I've ended up walking a lot during the pandemic and easily stayed with it. I expanded on it and walked a part of the Camino in Spain last month. One of the best things I've ever done. Having a goal or something like that to look forward to has made it even easier for me to stay with the walking and now it's just something I do. I'm going back to the Camino in April.

Tons of trainers and Dr's. on the forum. My only advice would be to get the Shoes, socks, shorts and shirts you really like that cause zero irritation.

Shoes, that is far more important than most think. When I used to run a lot I soon learned why they said shoes wear out in 6 months. They look fine but they just don't have the same support and cushioning. Walking they go longer but they are dead LONG before they look worn.

I'm on my 4th pair of shoes now and I think I'm pretty close to having the issue solved. Ironically the cheapest shoes I bought seem to be the most comfortable. I've been just toughing it out through ankle pain and blisters to get to the right pair.

Still walking 5 miles a day every day. Today's weight in was a loss of 2 pounds from last week which is fine. Still going to take me months...but I'm lighter now than I have been in many years so I'm happy about that.

    keep on walkin'.....
