My latest addition to Hachette’s 1/24 WRC collection: Björn Waldegaard’s 1970 Porsche 911 S, winner of the Rally Monte Carlo. Björn repeated his win of the year before and made it a hat-trick for the 911 as Vic Elford had already won in 1968.

Very nice model, a rally classic: the details are spot-on as are the different markings – only the wheels have a slightly too big diameter compared to the real thing and some of the decals are a bit too small, but that is already nit-picking. I would rate it 8,5/10 pts (mine had a few fine scratches on some decals and on the right front wheel)

On to the pics - first the real thing (at the award ceremony after the event):

The last addition to my WRC 1/24 rally collection, and a rather disappointing one: Hannu Mikkola’s winning car of the 1979 Bandama rally (Ivory Coast, West Africa), the last event in the 1979 WRC calendar: Against rather weak opposition, Mercedes took the first 5 places, Mikkola beating Björn Waldegaard, but reaching 2nd position here was enough for Björn to clinch the first ever rally driver’s world championship, beating Hannu with on single point for vice-champion. (Mikkola would reach his goal in 1983 with the Audi Quattro).

As in 1980, Mercedes won the same rally again, but did not succeed elsewhere (remember: a heavy luxury cruiser with automatic transmission), so they pulled the plug after engaging the 1980 world champion Walter Röhrl who directly told them for the upcoming Monte Carlo Rally the car would be good for a top ten result but not better than 5th.

Onto the model: the rather boring livery is correct, the original did not sport any sponsor decals, too – only silver with a matte black hood. Image Unavailable, Please Login

The model is large and very heavy, the details look good, only the 4 mudflaps (on every wheel) are missing – this can easily be corrected, but something with the body just looks wrong to me: it looks a bit too low (as if it had been minimally sectioned), the ground clearance looks therefore a bit high, but most of all the length of the roof (too short) and the contour of the c-pillar (too narrow ?) does not get me – Compare this with the real car!

IMO this does not look as it should – therefore only 6/10 pts - the weakest model of the series (of the ca. 30 models I bought)

I always liked the one ESCI did with Boss markings. Much better although that model is not great. This is my last rally also. Now only 1/24th F1 and maybe 1/24th Lemans and 1/24th Ferrari F1 in 2023 if the rumors are correct.

Tom, have you heard any rumors concerning the Le Mans series?

This is maybe little off topic, but few weeks ago I just happen to meet half of my collection "in flesh" :) (well, Impreza and Lancer are fakes, build as N-group cars, but the others are real. 911 is in T version....). There were also few Deltas, Ascona, Mk. I and Mk. II Escorts and many other cool cars, that weren't included in WRC Collection (Datsuns, Volvo PV544, Mini, BMW 2002s etc....)

Nice videos done by a person in Japan for several of the Hachette Diagostini 1/24th F1 cars. Very nice quality, hard to ignore for the price!!! Cheaper than an unbuilt plastic kit and made by a company who also does kits of the same quality

Sorry I missed your question. They keep talking about 1/24th Lemans winners on the Italian site. I bet it will happen next year. The F1 1/24th scale Big F1 Collection increase up to 150 and the 1/24th Ferrari F1 collection are still not confirmed. Diagostini does say 80 F1 cars compared to Italy 60. I bet we get them all, Lemans and F1!!! Hachette is on a roll and they love 1/24th.

Nice detailed models, but his videos show obvious quality and design flaws with crooked wings and wheel geometry.

All can be fixed and detailed by a good model builder.
