Right now at my local Ferrari dealer they’re rebuilding three transmissions after the dreaded speed sensor failure. One 458, one Portofino, and one F12.

Will definitely be renewing my power warranty!

Do you believe Ferrari is losing money on their sales of power warranties?

    Couple of points, here…..

    1) Many of these cars are approaching 10 years old. Mine shows a build date of 3/13, so yeah there’s the age factor.

    2) these cars generate a tremendous amount of heat, especially the FL cars. I open the hatch after every drive, especially in the summer and always at the track.

    3) there is literally no data on condition of fluid changes or evidence most folks are changing theirs. I should have my results from Blackstone shortly, and will post them once I do. I ‘think’ mine has 35,000 miles, but it could be more (eventually I will check the gearbox mileage).

    4) if all three failures point to a specific item (speed sensor), this would be more indicative of a systemic problem and single point failure, possibly exposing Ferrari to legal consequences.

    5) based on what I’ve been reading, failures seem to be random with respect to year, perhaps mileage, and even usage. Mine 458 is tracked and would represent a worst case scenario.

I encountered this situation years ago with Porsche and their infamous split crankshaft design. The IMS bearings were said to be failing at an alarming rate, so I had mine changed at 65,000 miles (it was in perfect shape). So some things do get blown out of proportion.

Only Ferrari knows the failure rate, and I doubt they’ll kiss and tell.

Good post, John, and only time will tell if this is a bonafide issue or simply one that gets an inordinate amount of attention. Could bode well for those seeking used cars and affect prices.

If there’s any good news, many shops (including some here on Fchat) are gaining the expertise to repair it at a fraction of the cost of a whole replacement. Thus far, I’ve had mine four years and lots of hard driving with no problems to date. In the grand scheme of things, it wouldn’t be catastrophic to have to amortize the repair over the time and use factor.

They sure lost on mine! I lost all odd gears w/ 6k on the clock and they gave me a brand new box to the tune of $40k installed! :)
