What about finishing 3rd (a real danger), or even 4th, due to retirements and penalties with an otherwise fast car?

I'd still say fast but unreliable. It's a lot harder to find performance when you're limited on chassis/aero. If you have chassis/aero and "only" need to find reliability...well.

Agreed, being on consistent 3rd/4th behind the drink cans in each qualy and race would be (even) more dispiriting.
At least now we have exciting Saturdays and dramatic Sundays.

It still sucks though, I want our guys to win sooo much.

I'm predicting another Leclerc pole that he can't convert to a win due to either inferior race pace or reliability. He deserves a better Ferrari.

It’s going to get done, along with the start/finish line. No worries.

The track surface looks like it needs a good cleaning too.

It's in Italian so take it for what it's worth. The commentator mis-pronounces Leclerc's name several times......it's Le-clere and not Le-clerk.

I don't how they get their information but it seems a valve broke into pieces thereby those pieces going into the turbo..........so they say.

IF that's the case, a broken valve would be because of detonation in whatever cylinder??? or the cam sprocket skipping a few teeth due to timing??

I wouldn’t put much faith in what they’re saying because right off the bat they say Ferrari put out a statement that the problem centred in the cylinder head. I didn’t see any statement from Ferrari so I’m guessing they took what was written in it.Motorsport.com—that claimed the same thing—and ran with it.

They’re saying that the engine uses 3 injection phases: a first one for ignition pre-chamber; a second to feed the power stroke; and a third phase as the exhaust valve is open that effectively is wasted except that it cools the valves. They claim that on circuits where they’re close to using the full 110 kg fuel allocation, the 3rd phase of injection is leaned out to save fuel. This, they claim, caused the exhaust valve(s) to overheat and fail.

I suspect this of all conjecture—really don’t know how they would know such details—also because the pre-chamber system they describe is the Mahle Jet ignition design which I would think they’ve done away with this year as they call their new engine Superfast.

Passed by the circuit on the way home tonight and looks like the final preparations are advancing well including all the structure around the entrance to the site.

Hopefully they get the “Salut Gilles” markings done tonight before the expected rain tomorrow.

Actually that IS the entrance from the Metro. The structure is a pedestrian overpass. Metro is on the left in that pic.

On my first visit to Montreal in 1982, Sunday was unusually chilly and I was under-dressed. The start was delayed, first by World Cup soccer and then by a fatal accident at the start, so the race did not begin until about 5 PM! By 2/3 distance I was so chilled that I left early - the only time I've ever done that for a GP - and watched the end of the race on the TV in my motel room!
