I'm doing belt replacement on my 2002 360 and everything has gone fine until it is time to put a new alternator belt in place. I lowered the tensioner as far as it will go but the belt will not go over it. The old belt came off easily, so I tried to put it back on, but it won't go over the tensioner pully either. bolt on the tensioner wheel has been loosened and the tensioning screw is all the way down (yes, I know you "tighten" the bolt to release tension) but there must be a trick. Any ideas?

No tricks that I recall but I checked the manual regardless. Nothing special. Just gotta hold your tongue right and remember, all cuss words are to be in Italian or they won't help.

Wow, finally got it. Now, I'm not a small man, 6'1", 220 lbs and in pretty good shape, but I pushed on that belt for two days trying to get it over the tensioner. In the end I used a long socket wrench extension with the socket part on the belt and the other end in a floor jack. One click on the floor jack and the belt popped right over the tensioner pully. i'm sure I must have been doing something wrong because it should not have been that tough.

Something sounds off. I'm about the same as you and I don't recall ever having to use any brute strength or prybars on mine.

Yes - that was one of the hardest parts of replacing all the belts! I used some dish soap on the smooth side to get it to slide over the tensioner pulley.

It's a pain. I end up loosening the actual pulley wheel, putting the belt around it half on, then sliding the pulley wheel on, then pushing the belt all the way in.

Interesting, I did not have to use any force on my 2002 Modena

I’d have to refer to the shop manual for the procedure but I can say I had no issues with the alt belt when I replaced all the belts including the timing belts on my 2001 360..
