I've been told by another Brazilian speaker that it's nowhere near as racist as it's made out to be by international media and Neguinho is apparently quite a friendly thing in Brazil. We have some other Brazilian-portuguese speakers on here who can clarify further I'm sure.

There’s no smoke without fire. F1 and Merc have nothing to gain from erroneously accusing a 3x wdc of racial slurs. This story is going to run and run…

Anyone else think this has been deliberately timed for Silverstone - a bit like politicians have teams to dig up and save dirt for use just before elections

Nelson Piquet never has been a role model for political correctness.

But Lewis Hamilton must feel very, very insecure that he needs to stir up this type of media attention one year after it happened.

Maybe this has already happened however someone fluent in Portuguese should chime in. I read that they don’t have the equivalent of the N word in that language.

    In most latin langs, black = n e g r o

If that's what he called him there's zero racism in that.
If anything it would LH / media adopting a xenophobic, colonial mindset.

This stuff is never about the facts, but what can be gained from it - and they will tap it for everything.

Indeed this is about motivating their 'star' and if indirectly it affects Max via his g/f's dad then that's a bonus

I’m certain there are Portuguese speakers in F1. Can’t bend over backwards to defend this kind of stuff.

Context matters, and it’s very clear when you read the translated statement that there was no friendly intent in his use of the term.

Would you be friendly when your son-in-law is pushed of the track at high speed and needs to be examined in a hospital?

Hey guys, just steppin to clarify nelson interview. The term "neguinho" is completely harmless
in Brazil. We don't use it in Portugal, but i have family in Brazil and am used to their vocabulary, and "neguinho" can even be seen as a friendly term. It's just a stupid conspiracy from british media.

I wouldn’t be a “Richard” like that though.

Hmm…if someone crashed into my daughter’s boyfriend? I’d probably want to know what happened and then turn my support to my daughter. Max is a giant paycheck for Nelson’s family so I can see why he takes it more personally, but to come at that angle is pretty immature and low-brow.

Like in the US and UK, it can be used in both ways, if you see Will smith saying it in any way, its ok, if you see Biden saying it, its racist no matter the context on which its said.

It's not a offensive word in Brazil, but sometimes it can be. how its used is important, seeing as he was having a go at LH he is obviously using it offensively.

Language/words are nuanced. Intent is the clarifier:

    - “Silk Sonic murdered that remake of Love’s Train!”

    - “I am going to murder that mf-er and take his Ferrari”

The gumption of the family member to act like Nelson is the victim is ridiculous. He said it the way it’s been perceived….own it and make amends. Yes, he COULD/SHOULD have just used Lewis’ name if he was trying to make an intelligent point. He wasn’t though, so…

“"The [racist term] put his car there to hit him on purpose," Piquet said. Later, he said, "He wanted to take him out no matter the cost. The [racist term] left the car there to hit him."
