You could be surprised by the number of people who think like Bernie. On different media, there is a huge number of folks who manifest support for Putin.
Bernie always showed a certain affection for dictators and despotes. All those years of running F1, living a life like royalty, probably didn't do him any good mentally.
Bernie had a very humble beginning and climbed the social ladder the hard way. I used to live in Bexleyheath (South East London) where he started. I have heard many stories about him, and met people who worked for him too. He had the reputation of being a rogue operator, generous, and loyal, but one who doesn't suffer fools gladly. Struggling to succeed may have given him the idea that a single individual can achieve more and quicker than a collectve. He admires authoritarian characters because they are doers like him, I guess.
I think your right. Trump shows similar behaviour. Checks and balances, democracy in general, are just an annoying obstacle for achieving what they think is right.
Bernie would certainly get the job done. Now many issues are half baked with committees and protracted timelines. The FIA non-jewelry rules were overlooked by Todt as he didn't want to upset Hamilton. The can is still being kicked down the road, it's either a rule or it's not.
Bernie had several associates through his life, but always ended up getting rid of them because they didn't share his vision, didn't want to move so fast or take risks. That's the way he established the first national car auction in UK, took over the Brabham F1 team, or the control of FOCA. He led single-handed Formula One Management for years, and shaped F1 the way he wanted, by tricking people, coercing or bribing them. To do all that, you cannot be a nice guy all the time.
A friendly reminder - a few posts are VERY close to P&R. Please be cognizant of P&R topics. @Phil~ @william
I concur. Respect to Martin Brundle, Bernie and his wife for a great interview. First class all around.
F1 banning Nelson? wtf is going on? Bernie is right on this one. The woke F1 will disappear up its own battery pack ..pity really.
