Curious to know if you guys running challenge cars either in the series or for other events are using a semi setup. I’m considering getting one and looking predominantly at the Kentucky trailer setups with liftgate. Do those of you running a race rig have advice or input on what to get and why?

    Looking at something like this:

That’s the boat I’m in. I’ve used support teams but there are other events I’d like to do or schedule conflicts that make having my own truck somewhat appealing. I see a number of these setups at tracks and a number of them look private so I’m trying to understand the pros and cons as well as what things to look for. One item is I’d like to take 5 cars to some events and done necessarily need the living quarters or even a full shop - just room for spares. I don’t know which setup is most conducive to my idea so figured I’d see what other guys are running…

A few guys that I know have smaller trailers that fit 1 to 2 cars and spares but nothing like a full rig. I think to make this work you would ideally have 2 to 3 guys sharing it and a dependable or FT driver. If you were near DC I might be able to come with those guys depending on costs and structure.

Did you need a CDL to drive that?

Haul your own is lots work on one end but less on the other
It's a race shop on wheels
You need to store it, get it to the track, stock it.
YOu have everything you need and can only blame yourself for what you forgot.
Worst thing? Trying not to keep modifying the trailer. I called it quits after the disaster 2 way radio system was installed. 100% off grid LOL

Geeze now Im thinking of more to add to it :)

Most race trailers are setup for 2 cars up top and gear downstairs. You can setup for 1 more car downstairs with seating benches that clear the tire wells. I suppose you could extend that to haul 4 cars but you would be missing out on having all of the storage cabinets for spares and gear. Getting cdl drivers is a real problem right now and trucks are priced crazy for lower mileage units.

I've run several setups, from a Toter and 4 car set up to pickup with a 48' gooseneck to a single car trailer. It really depends what you want to do and how you want to do it. A 5 far hauler and traditional tractor is a TON of work, including finding a cdl driver, staff (you need staff for 5 cars), plus wrangling 4 other drivers/cars is poopshow..... They will not have the value of time as you. One will always show up late, one will break at track and who is fixing it etc..... A Toter/gooseneck, or RV/Tag, that holds 2-3 cars, plus a ton of spares is my route.... And, my wife also races so we need to manage our cars, plus we can either bring a street car to pop around in, or bring someone else's car. Again, you end up "managing' that car, so be prepared. Best thing about a Toter/RV is having space to hang and or stay at the track, which is a lifestyle we enjoy...

Some want to parachute in, drive and leave, some, like us, like the scene of hanging (besides, cars break and we like to try and fix a the track)

Now all that said, having you own rig, if you can find a place to store it (we have it at our shop), is awesome. All your stuff.... Know where it is...... not as much loading and unloading... (we keep ours fully stocked, including tools and such, so we don't have to load and unload...)

You also have to be prepared to be the first at the track (parking a big rig with a full lot is impossible) and will be last to leave....

    Remember, though, YMMV...

So I should clarify my intention was to take my own cars here and there then retain local support crew as needed. I’ve got some trustworthy guys working for me that have CDLs and others that do transport as subcontractors I could retain too, so the labor isn’t a concern. I also own warehouses around the country so storage of the rig isn’t an issue. There are events I’d like to do (shows and/or track events) that ideally I’d bring multiple cars to and it’s annoying to have to pick only one or two as support team has space for limited cars. Just thinking about how to solve that or if it even makes sense to…
