I’ve been to a few in the bleachers of the old Yankee stadium. I saw one guy take a hook to the face from some savage, smash his head off of a railing, and land on the ground unconscious. Booing at a grand prix is nothing compared to that sort of dirtbaggery.
OK, that's bad. I've never seen it get out of hand to that extent. So that's an extreme example. Extremes are not normal. Cheering and booing are normal and I'll stick to that opinion.
I am extremely pretentious, and proud of it too ! F1 used to be a sport with some class; it has lost that unfortunately. No need to continue this conversation, as far as I am concerned; I don't like bad behaviour, maybe due to my upbringing.
I don't think it's a big deal at all, it's part of the sports in general. I cheered when Latifi crashed last year in Abu Dhabi. The modern F1 cars are so safe these days, drivers rarely get injured during crashes. I don't think people will cheer if half the crashes result in injuries. SkySports team is making nothing out of something to make them look like they are on moral high ground.
Agreed regarding the SkySports crew. They should stick to the reporting of the teams and drivers and their results. What happens in the grandstands isn't the show. And that's coming from someone who actually admires the SkySports crew and their knowledgeable coverage.
This is definitely the problem Previously the average F1 fan had a better understanding of the sport and it's nuances The sport like everything else is being dumbed down Just look at the Miami race facility and compare it to Monte Carlo You can't buy class Just another good thing descending in Idiocracy
LOL grow some thick fan skin. Wow! Fans are transparent lol. But they boo and we need this thread LOL. Have another drink lol.
Last year Sky used Verstappen crashing into the wall at very high speed as their closing for their Christmas ad. Sky has a VERY long way to go before they can claim the moral high ground.
Mainstream medias have huge responsibilities for what is going on among population. Sport is no exception.
Sky is doing the vast majority of international commentary. They've painted Max as the villain for quite some time now, they encourage the British crowd by not condemning the booing right there and then but in fact laughing about it and cracking jokes, and calling them the best crowd ever. And now they are surprised it's happening on them. Lewis with his daft comments last week after the race also don't help his cause, bringing up a crash from a year ago and somehow trying to paint himself as the moral victor. The British F1 media is by far the largest and most read/viewed in the world, purely because it's the centerpoint of everything F1. Which is great but if the majority of them goes painting someone as the villain, well, what do they expect when people with eyes and the ability to form their own opinion see it? The Brits, with their massive viewership worldwide, have a moral duty to report accurately. They don't, well, they then can't be surprised when people voice against them. Thankfully there are still fair Brits out there. Martin Brundle, Button, Chandhok, Peter Windsor, Scott Mansell and so on. I don't like the booing but I despise the hypocrisy.
Natalie Pinkman from Sky called out the booing last week and yesterday. Good on her, at least she's consistent.
This ! The level must be pushed up and not in the opposite direction. In France even teachers are shocked by this degradation among students.
It was back around 15 years ago. There were other instances of fanatical barbarians chronically heckling visiting fans, and even players in right field. Fans screaming to the Blue Jays’s Vernon Wells that he wasn’t even in the video game is forever burnt into my memory. One time, a security guard hand delivered a print out of Vernon Wells’s player in the video with the hand written note saying “I am in the video game, b****. - Vernon Wells” It used to he so bad that they outlawed beer in the bleachers, and that calmed it down somewhat.
Cheering a crash is not the same as cheering an injury. Obviously LH will conflate the two ---> https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/unraveling-the-mindset-of-victimhood/
[QUOTE="SS454, post: 148627183, member: 256599" I found it interesting that SkySports are making huge deal out of the Orange Army cheering at Hamilton's relatively mild crash, but didn't say anything about when the British fans cheered Verstappen's terrifying Silverstone crash in 2021. I also remember Johnny Herbert pleading to the crowd booing at Hamilton, but nobody really cared when Verstappen was being booed.[/QUOTE] And they're doing it again today. Several unconfirmed (but I do think truthful in some cases) reports from people saying they feel uncomfortable by the Dutch fans and 1 lady being told LH fans deserve no respect. Jennie Gow (correctly) said this is inexcusable. But last week when we also had reports of fans being abused by Mercedes fans, including one woman being subjected to so much verbal abuse on the Friday she refused to go back... Dead silence. Last week Crofty laughed when Max was being booed and made jokes about it, and several times during and after the event he said they where the best fans. Now he's crying that Lewis is subject to the same. Either call all of it out or nothing. Don't select what you want to show or not. We all know the Brits control the narrative and they select what they want to show. Max called out those booing as well, but it's gone completely unnoticed by all as the British press doesn't even highlight it: All they care about is write about Abu Dhabi last year or other unrelated things. They could've run a headline with the above "those aren't real F1 fans". But no. They went with "I don't care who I beat".
Context, booing say for unsportsmanlike conduct that’s obvious…..sure. Cheering for a crash hmm. That said we all like action. So you might be happy that there’s a safety car.
Boo who you like, but I think cheering crashes that are beyond obvious fender benders, is poor behaviour.
Lewis comments coming after he celebrated, putting max into the wall and hospital last year? this dumbass has really no class.
Agreed. I've been a fan of a particular teams/competitors in various sports, and have never understood the need that others have to so actively, verbally express their dislike for the other team. It's like some weird posturing contest, of who can produce the best insult without getting assaulted. Booing is no different; you're just relying on the crowd factor to enjoy a two minute hate. Booing - if done at all - should be reserved for a competitor who is so far outside the lines of fair-play that they should be ejected from the game. A footballer who punches an opponent in the face. A NASCAR driver who leaves the pit and intentionally t-bones a rival as they are passing. You can support Max over Lewis, or Lewis over Norris. Fine, have your favorite and cheer for them. But booing a driver simply because *he is on the track* is just classless, and cheering when a driver slams into a wall is just pathetic.
100% agree. I don't like the bad behavior either. F-1 used to be a more refined way of going car racing - BUT back in the 70's I also remember the BOG, and that is was an excuse for drugs, booze and a wild weekend.... F- 1 has to make sure that culture does not come back. That is what I see happening.
