About a $2M profit in 5 years, not bad. Estimates at the Amelia Island auction in 2017 were $2.2M - $2.4M.
World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Mike Tyson's F50 104220 actually sold for $2,640,000, but let's not count the profit before it has materialized.
Yes, you are absolutely right. It was just an example to indicate the rising prices. I’m curious to see how much the car will be auctioned for.
104220 has sold several times since the auction in 2017, so the profit based on that figure has already materialized.
It’s not a matter of profit but of standards. How can owners let a a beautiful model like the F50 fall into such state. Clearly from the previous few posts it’s people who are simply into flipping and cashing on whatever comes along. Just looking at the engine bay makes me look the other way…
Which part is off putting? (Really curious. I see the CF is a bit yellow and the manifolds seem to be blackened?)
Hi Joe, being the founder of this thread on the F50 and following through for over a decade you have seen and got to know more F50 than I did or will. You are right about the two areas that pop up strongly. However, the plenum/air chambers are so severely discoloured and the exhaust in in such a sorrowful condition (not just a manifold or two but the 4 manifolds, the 4 pipes to cats, the 2 cats, the 2 pipes to silencers) that I wondered did that car went sand dunning somewhere (if the 6k miles are genuine). Image Unavailable, Please Login Versus a normal looking one Image Unavailable, Please Login And this exhaust block Image Unavailable, Please Login Versus one where we can see clearly the various parts (ok this is an extremely clean one, but an average one should still be so much better). Image Unavailable, Please Login The silencers look ok but not sure if they are the same colour (or light effect). Image Unavailable, Please Login from the few pictures available (most are of shiny exterior/ interior) one can notice age and use (some can call it patina, other would call it lack of care). Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login I think the give away is the condition is not consistent, some of the engine parts are likely to have been refinished (not a bad thing) but this makes other like the carbon look older/aged. I think overall 5/10. It's been tidied up for auction but many parts are artificially too shiny (at least to my taste) like the tyres, black leather inside, the fixed document holders. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login The flight case is also missing it’s interior lining in both the upper and lower halves (see two pictures in brochure). The fact that it was sold in ‘17 then few times since and now again in ‘22 is in line with the non long-term ownership comprehensive & consistent care that I find important. Of course the above is just an opinion and the car can be fundamentally sound and original and fetch a high price. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh, when you stated the sold price is 2017 and said to "not count the profit before it has materialized", I thought you were implying the price in 2017 had something to do with calculating the "profit" to be realized when the car sells in August. My mistake. Since the consignor of 104220 acquired the car as part of a package for which he paid a single price, calculating a return, even for him, might be murky. I think we can all agree that the market for F50s is very strong, and certainly much stronger than it was 5 years or so ago.
Thanks Karim, I will make contact with Manu and have a chat with him. A loud exhaust for me is overrated. If you have a great naturally aspirated engine, the intake and mechanical noise to me is just as interesting - in fact much more interesting - than a loud exhaust note. I am thinking of my E28 M5 with the 3.5 engine from the M1, or any number of 911s as well as V12 Ferrari.
I agree. I had a straight pipe on an F50 and a Tubi on another for a long time. Then switched to originals. Your discover, as you mentioned, the harsh mechanical sound which is really the auditory complement of the vibrations you get in the tub. I think on an F40 a sports exhaust is value added as well as the megafono on the 288GTO. (Well let me add also that a sports silencer on the 599GTO as well as on the Carrera GT was my choice also for many years and added magic, aggression, and anger. But stick with originals on the F50.

Thank you for the thorough and detailed answer. It certainly raises some questions as to how the car was cared for or used. It will be interesting to see how much this one will bring in this F50 friendly market!

This is the car that was damaged in an accident in June 2019 during the Cavalcade in Capri, Italy. It was subsequently repaired but unfortunately the little build tag stating "319/349" got lost and unfortunately was not re-attached to the left front. Over the years I have inspected numerous other F50s and lately noticed two other F50s, both in the UK, who had also suffered front damage and after extensive repairs somehow "lost" their build tags. Seems nobody notices such "details" and F50s even get certified without that tag....... When one of these tags has "fallen off" it automatically raises questions and might be a hint for former front damage and repairs (due diligence!). Marcel Massini
@MM: the tag din´t make it to the accident in June 2019, so it couldn´t be reattached after the rebuild...
I was out in the F50 a few days ago and went to a local pub …. Just a warm day with a cider in my hand and a lovely older gentleman started talking to me …. He started talking to me about his dads cars that he remembered as he grew up and that he’d had 250 lussos, Daytonas spyders etc … listening to this lovely older man , over a cider ( not my usual tipple but difficult to beat a Scrumpy Jack on a hot English day ) discuss old Ferraris and discuss the F50 infront of us … F50 magic - reinforced that few , if any other car manufacturers have the history , loyalty and romanttacism of ferrar …..
