My Mondial has the 'original' spare. Does the weight help/hurt performance? I would never change the tire, a fellow owner suggested I take it out for better performance and space.

Remove it, try it and report! The last Mondials (T) have no spare, only a can of tyre sealing spray.

One of the first things I've done, spare out and in storage. Didn't change anything, just got some emergency luggage room in front now...

Took it on a short drive. Did not notice anything different.

There are posts on here about the height with the spare removed, about 1/2' to 3/4" higher, looks odd to me.

If its a bar hopper take it out. You'll never get far from home. If you enjoy travelling leave it in. I was 400 miles from home and got a flat in the TR. If I had no spare it would have been either a 400 mile tow truck ride or 3-4 days in local hotel waiting for some useable tire to get me home.

With a spare tire is was back on road in less than half hour and on time for dinner.

In a 4000 lb or so 30+ year old car how important is leaving a 30 lb or so spare at home in the name of additional performance?

I’ve had a couple of Ferrari guys tell me to take it out because it can come through the windshield in a crash. Any truth to that?

No. Rear edge of hood on US cars is very specifically designed to remain attached at the cowl to prevent it from going through windshield. That would likewise keep the spare in the compartment.

In the over 30 years these cars have been on the road if the spare going through the windshield could happen there would be many examples.
Find evidence of one on a US car.

Thank you Rifledriver. Glad to hear this is an "old wive's tale". I was also told the same thing—that my spare wheel would go through the windshield. But I've continued to keep mine in the car due to healthy skepticism about that claim.

Brian would you have images of that feature? I'd be interested to know more about it.
