Contrarian opinion, I don't like how it looks. Might be that its round, which doesn't really go with the rest of the room design. Is there a square one available for around the same price? I think the staircase looks elegant and really fits the space, not so much with the elevator. Plus the added cost, maintenance and traffic flow issues.

Course its not my house, if you like it go for it! Particularly if it saves you space and you need to put one somewhere in the house, might be the best option.

There is an octagonal one but much more expensive- not worth it. Very good points all around. The maintenance, cost and looks doesnt bother me so much. The traffic flow is whats on my mind and keeping me from pulling the trigger.

Can you do both? The staircase and a single elevator for dad?

I mean I could- its just a waste of resources and money. Here is the full floor plan of the 3rd floor. It shows not only the two staircases in relation to the whole house, but it also shows where the main elevator is. Originally the main elevator was to service all 3 floors (lower level bedrooms, main living area, my 3rd floor office)

What we wanted to do was to swap out the main elevator with a glass elevator to serve all 3 levels. But this is not possible because on the lower level and main level, we have 2 doors into the elevator, one from my wife's closet and the second from the living room/kitchen. The glass elevators only can have one door. So then we thought, just have the two sided non-glass elevator just for the main house and a second glass elevator for my office. The cost of the second glass elevator instead of the stairs is roughly the same +/- 10k. So can I do the 2 elevators, and two staircases?? Sure- but now its just getting stupid and expensive.

Here is a quick schematic of the whole space- this is the 3rd level view. Garage, master bedroom, great room are on level 2. Office is level 3. Additional bedrooms level 1. Image Unavailable, Please Login

So you’re dad can still access the upper garage floor through the main elevator

Correct. The way it’s designed if we just stick with the original plan the central elevator services all three floors. If we change it the central elevator will only service the main floor and the lower level. We would put in the glass elevator to service the main level and my upper floor office. So yes all three floors would be accessible currently with one elevator or with two elevators if we decide to change.

Just spent an hour with my wife and builder. We are all of the condense that the glass elevator is totally bad ass but completely not practical. Still no decision. However we did make a minor tweak to the room that will all us to add it if we decide to move forward. Stay tuned…

I think this is smart. I would not install the elevator if the stairs go away. We just put an elevator in our new construction build and while I’m glad I have it, it takes way too long to move between the floors for able bodied people. It start driving you crazy quickly if that was the only option.

The stairs, as rendered, are a significant design element. Keep 'em.

Agree, we have an elevator in our home and it is slow as molasses… only ever use for 2 things: luggage and laundry.

I agree with this. Even if the elevator capacity was 3-5 occupants and could be accomplished on revenue neutral basis, I would still opt for the stairs. I just think that stylistically, the stairs are central to the space.

I’m a little late. But I think the stairs look awesome and am not a fan of the elevator alone. Maybe instead you put in a fireman’s pole you can slide down to jump in the Ferrari! I looked into one of those tube elevators and agree it looks cool. A single person one just doesn’t make sense to me, though, and as you said, the three person one is significantly more expensive.

I especially like how one central elevator can reach all floors - a very practical solution for your dad and also for the two of you in future years. I think your plans are very neat, by the way. My only question is if the garage is big enough! :)

After noodling on this and discussing with my wife and builder- we are skipping the elevator and sticking with the original plan of the stairs. Thanx everyone for the feedback. It helps with these decisions which are so inconsequential in the long run but seem like the most important thing while you are planning your dream home.

Need to figure out 3 more vehicles for the space. Not sure what.... Suggestions certainly welcome.

It's funny you said this.. i have been thinking of your "dilemma" and arrived at a conclusion last night that i wouldn't do it.. the "coolness" wore off in a few days and some of feedback help.. not that my conclusion is important ..just wanted you to know
