599 Clutch Install Procedures

Thank you. That description helped me to understand.

Curious now on which setting are reset when you unhook the battery and which are not . for example in the f430 I think there is some self learning that happens with the f1 transmission.. I wonder what else...

I did some investigation on this. I do not have the 599 workshop manual, but I was able to find the clutch replacement section in the f430 manual. Assuming the procedure is not markedly different, this will give you a good idea of where exactly in the process it is necessary to use the SD3 tool etc. Hope this is helpful to the OP:

I only glanced through it..but it looks like the SD3 is not used until after the clutch is installed. Further, this is a 430 not a 599 manual. Please don't take my word for it..but if you re-read it and find that is the case (and think the procedure for the 430 and 599 is the same) then it seems that you could replace the clutch then truck it to a dealer to do the rest.

 

sorry to be late, very late to this very interesting conversation,
four points :
1) it very easy to find the work shop manuals on ebay they are not so expensive and very useful.
2) can i use other instrumentation to replace sd3? Also not made by ferrari?
3) there is a guy that by remote will calibrate your clutch, do you think it is a nice alternative?
4) for sure money is always an important point but in my case the satisfaction to replace the clutch ( also wit help ) is the most valuable thing!

Exactly, you can give a monkey a hammer but he isn't building you a house.

 

If you are not very familiar with these cars there are big mistakes even made by very experienced Ferrari techs. I regularly need to repair Transmission control units that have been bricked because they cleared Bellville curve data and then you have a car that wont operate or even start. Just because you get access to a scanner doesn't mean its as simple as you think.

I know Launch X431 Pro works on a f430. I don’t see why it wouldn’t for a 599.

I have used a Launch Mini Pro X-431 to replace an F1 clutch on the 430. It will need some tweaking at the end to get the PIS and other parameters correct. It can be done.

 

Exactly, I am seeing several a month that are getting damaged by technicians or DIY that make a wrong selection in the self learning of the clutch and it results in a TCU you can do nothing with without overwriting good data. Happy I could help you out, you've always taken good care of me.

 

No they send me the TCU and I need to manual load in good files into the Eprom.

 

Clutch and gearbox data is saved in non volatile memory so no it is not wiped out when the battery is disconnected.

Where I can find the right parameters for the clutch? Or someone knows where to find the instructions how tu tune the clutch on a 599?

 

A good shop would be your best bet...

 

You read the parameters at the beginning with the old clutch to give you a set of parameters you know it had so you can refer to it later. Then you replace the clutch. Before you start the engine, there are some self learn procedures you can have the tool do to discover parameters such as PIS, clutch positions etc. Then you set the initial values of new clutch position and PIS. Fire up the car, bed in the clutch, let it warm up, drive it some, tweak the PIS to make it perfect. Experience counts. Youtube helps.

 

Its not just about being cheap!

It's the price one pays for modern performance and conveniences. IF you want to do your own car repairs, as a 360 gated owner, I would be reluctant to get anything newer. The new electronics and software are beyond what someone without factory training, equipment, and knowledge base can do on their own. There is a trade!

 

There's the guy in the UK that has the "Ratarossa" that posted videos of his DIY doing the clutch on an F1 360. If you ever want to get talked out of doing this yourself, watch the video.

 

Once you do it a couple times it becomes routine. But that first time especially for a hobbyist who just plays around..it's a pretty awful thing to change..
